It's not about any fan or some Internet cowboys wants/needs....

It's about moving this program forward and the players' best interests.

It's early but, was he offered retirement?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah i agree

He's been a good coach at Clemson and we have seen alot of success under Jack over his coaching career. Im glad the AD decided to make a change i just wish Jack would of retired instead of making us fire him. Do you or anyone else think Leggett will try to pursue another coaching job somewhere else?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah i agree

Jun 4, 2015, 4:34 PM

In Jack's mind he still has what it takes to win. He may still have something left in the tank, but I don't think that he still has big time college coaching left in his tank. No matter how good a coach he believes that he is, he still has to recruit the best of the best in D1 sports to win at the top. Jack just wasn't getting that done!!!

It doesn't matter what any Clemson fan on T-Net, face book, twitter or any where else wanted. All hiring or firing pertaining Clemson athletic coaches all comes down from the AD, BOTs, and the President. Jack and DRad had a talk about what the consequences would be after last season if it were more of the same this season. There is no doubt in my mind that if Jack would have done some firing of his own after last season, he would have bought himself enough time to finish out his contract. Jack was hard headed and stubborn, and I think that he felt that the BOTs would protect him, that didn't happen. I wish Jack the best, and I thank him for his years at Clemson University.

Well you can bet the ranch that no matter who they hire, TNet will think it is the worst hire ever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Should have at least let the man retire.

Jun 4, 2015, 12:12 PM

Or maybe they offered that and he refused.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's something in these hills.

Is it possible he refused to retire? If that's the case....

Jun 4, 2015, 12:41 PM

then this was only other option. Can't see giving him an extension based on the programs regression over last 8 years.

I'm pretty sure they told him to wipe his slate clean of asst. coaches and he said no, that he'd go down with his ship. Have to admire him for that.

That's what we call cutting off your nose to spite your face. If your oarsman are part of the reason that your ship is sinking, strap on a life preserver and jump ship.

He had plenty of time to do the right thing, unfortunately

for him, he thought the right thing was to continue his downward trend

Jack took Clemson to the NCAA tournament on a consistent basis. Under him he filled the stadium more than any other coach Clemson has had. He was responsible for the fan growth that caused the additions of of the stadium. He build the prosperity and win all feeling Clemson fans have today. Then the university and fans took his job away from him.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was time.

Jun 4, 2015, 12:43 PM

I agree with all he has done and how much he has grown the program but it's regressed the last several years. It's time for new blood into the program. I thank Jack for all he's done. Wished he woulda offered to just retire but I think he's too proud or stubborn for that. I wish him well.

JL is in the HoF. He's obviously been successful here. I don't think the fans/university "took" his job from him. He was given a chance to clean up his staff last year and didn't. This year wasn't a successful year. You can't say because we snuck into the NCAAT that is was a successful season. Mediocrity is not what Clemson baseball expects/wants, yet that's what it has been recently.

So leggett was our 24th baseball coach, but he was here 22 years and wilhelm here for 36 before that? So that means we had 22 coaches through 1957? What year did we first field a team?
