Tony Elliott: Lessons learned from Chad Morris, Swinney preparing him to be head coach

Former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris was fired as the head coach at Arkansas Sunday following a blowout loss to Western Kentucky. For current co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, there are lessons to be learned from the Morris situation and lessons to be learned from watching Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.

What a great Promotional pitch to be a head coach...

Elliot's gotta love this kind of press. He's clearly head coach material, and articles like this can't help but move him forward faster. Way to go Tigernet! ;)

I don't know how many T-Netters were old enough, or not so mad about Dabo's hiring to watch and hear all the things that Dabo had to when he was hired as the next Clemson HC at the time. But everything that Dabo said back then, he has made everything that he said come true, and I do mean everything!!!But I believe that the reason that Dabo has been able to do what he said he would do, is bc Terry Don trusted and believed in Dabo and Dabo's abilities, and bc he did, Terry Don and the board of trusties was patient enough and gave Dabo the time and what he needed to be successful at Clemson. I would bet right now everything that I own, that nobody back when Dabo was hired has ever regretted a minute of the time they gave Dabo to put his plan together, and it was easy sailing all the way bc Dabo had to make some hires and do some firing. But he wasn't scared to make the moves that needed to be made to assure his success as the Clemson Head FB Coach. Just ask his good friend Billy Napier, as soon as Dabo saw he couldn't cut as our OC, Dabo let him go regardless of how much he hated firing his good friend!!! Dabo put in some very long days before he got the coaches he want before he saw a day of rest. Dabo wasn't only a good hire, but he was the best hire at HC ever for the Clemson FB program, IMHO!!!

I would suggest that he is the best hire at HC, certainly in the top 5, in the history of college football.

So happy we have this type men in our program. It gets no better, and it has resonated with the players, the recruits and their families, and all the people who love Clemson (and that even includes many who were not and are not Clemson fans. I have UGA fans, GA Tech and many others come up to me with no solicitation and sing Dabo's praises. He is as good as it gets. It's just that simple!

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott: Lessons learned from Chad Morris, Swinney preparing him to be head coach

I’m just gonna throw out some thoughts. I’m very grateful for the offensive changes Chad brought to Clemson. I think he is a quality guy but might not be head coach material. What was his record at SMU? Not good. He must have recruited well since they are a top 25 team now but while he was HC they were not good. The current coach figured out how to win with his recruits. Surely the talent at Arkansas was better than SMU when he arrived. The former coach had a better record when they fired him. He might just be best as an assistant and recruiter. The HC job is entirely different.

Do y’all remember Tony Elliots first game as co-offensive coordinator. He and Jeff Scott figures out how to get the best out of Cole Stout and we destroyed Oklahoma. Not sure that happens with Chad calling the plays.

I disagree with your opinion

Nov 11, 2019, 8:44 PM

It’s easy to throw darts at Chad but what he did for us was remarkable. He improved our toughness, our S&C program, nutrition program and gave us an offensive identity.
He turned a sewer at SMU into a decent team with an upward trajectory.
I have no idea why he took the AR job as it rivals any school as one of the worst jobs in any conference. Recruiting is incredibly difficult. Fan base is delusional.
For those who forgot, Danny didn’t have a lot of success there either but set the stage for the next HC when he finally starting getting some better players.
Chad is a quality HC and its a shame so many Clemson fans feel the need to demean him.
That’s some of my thoughts.

I don’t think I was throwing darts. I’m happy he made a stop at Clemson. I Stated he could recruit talent. Heck I think he was DW’s recruiter. I just don’t think he has the skill set to put it all together yet and he should have stayed at SMU to gain the experience in a much less stressful environment. Where is he going to go next? What power 5 conference team is going to hire a coach that lost every conference game.

I have to disagree with you about Chad Morris time at SMU. In his 3 seasons their he improved in wins. His last season at SMU he was 7-5. He took a program people have been trying to get back on track for 40 years when they received the death penalty.

I believe if Arkansas had given Chad time he could have fixed that mess in Fayetteville, Ak too. Just like Dabo said you cannot fix a program in less than 2 years.

I would like to have seen him stay at SMU at least 5 or 6 years. But CM has always been the restless type. But he needs to learn to stay where is has been planted and having success.

Arkansas has had 5 HC’s and 1 interim HC since CLEMSON hired Dabo. I am not sure if Chad ever had the complete support of BOT or the AD. Same goes for Willie Taggart. FSU is expecting an immediate turn around with their program. Each year Jimbo let the program decline maybe not in wins but discipline, priorities and work ethic. WT needed more than 1 1/2 years to change things down at FSU.

We shall see what each school does but if I am Jeff Scott or Tony Elliott I would in the opposite direction of both of those schools. With young families Clemson IMO right where all of Clemsons coaches need to be. Whoever takes the Arkansas and FSU jobs is going to have to put in a lot of hours and sacrifice family life just to get those programs back on track.

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott: Lessons learned from Chad Morris, Swinney preparing him to be head coach

Nov 13, 2019, 12:26 PM

Long, but I think that what I typed is as close to the truth as I could explain the happenings at Clemson for the last decade!!!

I definitely agree, and here's why. First of all, I think that when Dabo took over as interim HC, he had more college coaching experience than Chad Morris had as a college FB HC, and even though Chad had been a HS HC, there is a huge difference between being a college HC than it is a HS HC.

In 08 when Dabo was promoted to interim HC I think it was going into our 7th game of the season, and he finished 08 with 2 losses and 4 wins in the regular season, and then he lost the bowl game, and that ends his interim HC season with 4 wins and 3 losses with all of T. Bowdens players, plus what was looking to be a good recruiting year going into the 09 season, but with TB out and Dabo in that recruiting year fell apart and was known as the dandy Dozen. As Dandy as it was, we still lost some pretty good talent in that class that put Dabo behind the 8 ball going into 09, and that hurt our Tigers pretty bad with building depth for the next 2-3 years, and there's no doubt in my mind that help Spurrier achieve his 5 in a row win streak that the coots will forever be proud of.

Going into 09 with Dabo hired as our HC, and he was as green as spring grass as a HC, but with T.B's players plus the Dandy dozen Dabo had a pretty good season with nothing settle with his assistant coaches in 09, Dabo still managed to have a decent season with 9-5 counting the bowl win with Kevin Steel as DC and Dabo and Napier as our OC's, and that was a train wreck waiting to happen. But Dabo still manages a a decent season.

Going into the 2010 season though, about everything Clemson FB was of Dabo's makings with him and Napier as OC's. They got pass 2 FCS schools to start the season with wins over North Texas and Presbyterian, and then the train wreck started to happen. Counting the bowl loss the 2010 season was a 6-7 season, but 6 of those loses wasn't terrible losses. We loss to @ #16 Aubarn by 3 in OT, and they won the NC in 2010, #16 Miami by 9, @ UNC by 5, @ BC by 6, @ FSU by 3, #18 6-6 coot team by 22 and that was a terrible loss at home. Then we loss to a 6-7 South Florida team in a bowl game. At least 70% of Tiger Nation was screaming across the country to FIRE Dabo, and the coots were promising if we kept Dabo that they would pay his salary:) Liars!!! But lucky for Tiger Nation Terry Don saw something in Dabo that the 70% wanting Dabo run out Clemson didn't see...

Going into 2011 season Dabo brings in a really good recruiting class, and he goes and hires Chad Morris, just out of HS ranks for 1 year. He was the HC at Lake Travis HS in Texass, and his first college OC job was at Tulsa, and Dabo hires him away from Tulsa to be the new OC at Clemson, and Chad brought with him a fast pace offense that he run in HS and 1 year at Tulsa. With The Chad and his fast pace offense, Clemson started the season with 8 straight wins, and ending the season with 10 wins and 3 losses in the regular season, the first 10 win season since Danny Ford was the HC at Clemson. Clemson goes to the Orange Bowl to play West Virginia, and Clemson suffered the worst beating ever in a bowl game, Clemson 33 and West Virginia 70. That was the end of Kevin Steeles career as the DC at Clemson, and good riddance bye, go, leave and leave quick.

At the end of the 2011 season, and the end of Kevin Steele's career at Clemson. Like with the Offensive problems, Dabo again promises to fix the defensive problems by firing Steele, and lucky for Dabo he finds what may have been a problem at Oklahoma with Brent Venable's having to again share DC power with HC Bob Stoop's little brother Mike Stoops, either way, a great get for Dabo and Clemson bc we love BV and he is a great DC, and he was the best DC that Dabo could have gotten with him being a new HC at Clemson, and I believe that Dabo and Tiger nation were very lucky for whatever the situation was at Oklahoma when BV came to Clemson!!! From here everybody I do believe knows the rest of this story.

A new HC at the college level has to have a ton of luck to help at being successful at the beginning of a new Head Coaching career in the college ranks, bc without it, a new HC will be doomed just like The Chad was bc it is hard to get luck to come with a school like the Arkansas job will need for whoever they hire, be it a new or old HC. Every new HC won't have a place like Clemson to start out at, and it must be bc Clemson is a great place to be a New Head Coach bc, two never before head coaches has succeeded at Clemson and has won a NC as a new 1st time ever HC!!! Danny Ford and Dabo Swinney says hello to all new head coaches starting out at a place like an Arkansas!!!

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott: Lessons learned from Chad Morris, Swinney preparing him to be head coach

Nov 12, 2019, 7:51 AM

Tony Elliott an Jeff Scott have been exceptional for Clemson, they seem to compliment each other, and the entire staff are believers, that is absolutely by design, an I believe Dabo was smart to construct his program that way!
Chad Morris will land on his feet. He brought SMU out and lead them to a bowl I think. He was absolutely hugely instrumental in the recruitment if DW4, Deshuane stated himself a number if times. The offense that Chad runs is geared towards very skilled athletes an he didn't have those athletes at this point. As I have read others say, maybe he didn't have the ability to see his guys talents and design an offense geared towards their talent. As stated earlier we saw it first hand when Tony an Jeff designed a package around the gifts of Cole Stoudt. I wish Chad Morris nothing but the best! Who knows, knowing Dabo he may throw him a life line. Go Tigers!!!

Love TE (And JS), but maybe I'm cynical - I can't help but these kind of articles is him angling for a job. I'd be happy for him if it works out, and so long as we have Scott we should be okay.. but I dunno - it almost feels like self-promotion a bit. I hate that part of this sport, this time of year.
