Some tongue in cheek kidding about it was a shame he didn't play for a good team like Alabama by Joe....then "wait, we lost this weekend" as he laughed. I think there was some of the work out tape, but that was on Fox as well.

How does the book revenue fit with NCAA rules?

In this case, it seems perfectly legitimate that Rodriguez should be able to write a book and keep the money. (And I hope he makes millions from the book and the movie rights.) But if this is allowed, I could imagine it being abused. For example an unscrupulous school could set up an unofficial system whereby 5-star recruits come to Bama and write 10-page online e-books or sell nature-photos that boosters buy for $50/each.
Anybody know the NCAA rule for this type of thing?

Yes, it could be abused, but the basic inclination ought to be one of liberty, not restriction. If the NCAA gets to pick and choose what can be written about for profit, then they end up with an aspect of control over wide swaths of people's lives and liberties just b/c they happen to also play college sports.
There was a Colorado football player a few years ago who wrote a book about his comeback from injuries sustained skiing, and b/c he happened to play football, the NCAA gave him some grief and hassle about "making money" off of his status as an NCAA athlete. Clearly they are not capable of making the correct judgment calls, so they simply shouldn't have or presume any authority over such matters. The rules concerning pay and illegal arrangements for compensation ought to err on the side of liberty and police the overt cases the best they can within that construct. Otherwise, they end up as bureaucratic tyrants of the college sports world.
