Artavis Scott's TD where Seckinger looked to be "pushing"

Oct 3, 2014, 1:43 PM

him over the goal line..

What is the exact rule on "aiding" a ballcarrier?

What if a guy breaks a long run and no juan is nearby accept a teammate... the defense gives up on the play, but the runner pulls a hammie at the 15 yd line. Kwesshen: can his teammate pick him up and carry him across the goal line?

It's possible, I think.

no.. i think that would be pretty clear aiding the runner

Oct 3, 2014, 1:45 PM

it's really a gray area... but i've seen it called when a players was stumbling, or going down, and a teammate literally grabbed him and pulled him foward for a 1st, etc...

Or he could hand him the ball

I never knew there was such a thing.

You just about have to grab a jersey and drag ...

Oct 3, 2014, 1:52 PM

...before it is considered aiding a ball carrier. Since Stanton is kinda-sorta blocking for him, it wouldn't be called.

If a situation like the one you described occurred, the ballcarrier would need to hand the ball off to his teammate, or risk getting flagged.

Yeah this is how I've seen it work. Years ago there were straps on jerseys where team mates could pull or hold up the ball carrier. That got outlaw along with blockers interlocking to format a wedge.

I don't know, but I want to comment on something else. Every time I see that play, I'm taken back by how #### strong Artavis is on that second push. That UNC guy was like a feather.

I really, really, REALLY want to see us start getting the ball to Artavis on some crossing routes, not unlike that (though on a shorter route). Only 19.4% of Watsons passes have been mid-range (6-15 yards from LOS), but I feel like we could get a lot of yards there with a talent like Artavis Scott coming across the middle.

Look at how wide open the middle gets on this play...and this is on a zone! The linebackers are constantly peaking into the backfield to make sure Watson isn't pulling the ball down, increasing vulnerability to the pass. By pounding the middle, we'll get a lot of yards and eventually force them to play honest, which will open up the running game a lot more.

Sorry for hijacking your thread :)

To answer your question it would be a penalty unless the stadium sound technician can successfully play this song for at least 75% of the time a player carries his teammate:

I remember when William Perry got called for that

Oct 3, 2014, 2:07 PM

with the Bears. He once carried Walter Payton into the endzone.

he could just give the ball to his teammate

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ever since the "Bush Push", refs have been ignoring this

Oct 9, 2014, 7:28 AM

unless it's incredibly blatant, i.e. pulling the teammate forward instead of pushing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

According to these people it's a penalty

Oct 9, 2014, 8:34 AM

However, I thought prior to last year they changed the rule so that pushing/pulling a RB/player into the endzone was no longer a penalty.

Aiding a ball carrier would be literally carrying or pulling him.

Oct 9, 2014, 8:39 AM

Back in the day some teams were sewing handles on jerseys so backs could be pulled by other players.

There's something in these hills.
