Changes in PTO

May 28, 2019, 3:48 PM

Work called a meeting to tell us about our new PTO starting Jan 1

Currently I get 15 days vacay/yr plus whatever I carried over from the previous years not to exceed 20 days. Plus I get a day off for my bday.

Starting Jan 1 any employee that has been more than 7 yrs gets 30 PTO and 5 Sick days. We can't carry anything over and the days are earned/accrued.

I have like 13 PTO days I need to use before the end of the year.

Does this mean you can't take long vacations in January?***

You should definitely just take every other Friday off

Just for fun.

It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

May 28, 2019, 4:13 PM [ in reply to Oops meant to say they aren't earned they just give them ]

Non earned PTO leaves potential for employees who are thinking about leaving to burn the company on the way out. That’s a big part of the reason for accrual over time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

depends . Accrued = earned, means you must

May 28, 2019, 4:31 PM

pay everyone that leaves any unused (accrued) PTO since it is viewed as earnings.

if PTO is "gifted" then it is owned by the company and doesn't have to be paid to employees when they leave. ie itss not paid if you quit or are fired. This is the case with most companies with high turnover .

It also depends on the state. some states have laws that dictate if, how, and when unused vacation is paid.

Are you complaining about more days off?

May 28, 2019, 4:07 PM

Because 30 > 15 I'd be celebrating and whipping out my dong and shaking it at people.

I can't take off the 4 weeks a year I get. They'd fire me if I took off that much time. If they got along without me for 4 weeks, they'd quickly figure out they could get along with out me the other 48 weeks, too.

Re: Changes in PTO

May 28, 2019, 4:47 PM

Remember working my way up to 3 weeks vacation and 5 days sick time with my first job. When it changed to this, I made the comment...If I save everything, I could stop showing up at thanksgiving and not return until February with all the holidays and PTO combined.

My boss looked at me and said...you are probably correct, but if I find I can do without you for 2 months, then I can probably do without you.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was sorta their point

May 28, 2019, 4:57 PM

Don't worry if you need a day off but don't let you work get behind

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why I never took more than 4 days or so off......

May 28, 2019, 5:07 PM [ in reply to Re: Changes in PTO ]

at a time. Leave them in a lurch then comeback and say hey I got this.

I haven't taken a sick day in 8 years

May 28, 2019, 6:06 PM

I know, I'm an idiot.

Even worse, I lost 2 vacation days last year because I didn't take them. Happens most every year.

But......I LIKE my job. That has a lot to do with not taking all the days I'm due. I'm genuinely happy to work.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t even know what PTO and sick leave are

May 28, 2019, 6:35 PM

100% commish based.

Work all weekend, but leave when I please

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

25 vacation days, 20 days sick leave

May 28, 2019, 9:49 PM

Twelve holidays and one floating holiday

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have a much simpler PTO system here.

May 29, 2019, 10:58 AM

I show up when I want to. I leave when I want to. When someone mentions 'company policy', I simply remark how wonderful their sun-bleached skull will look on a pike in my front yard, and go back to steps 1 and 2. It's worked flawlessly for 33 years.
