Anyone who cares about the position ranking of high school

Juniors by commercial recruiting services deserves any grief he/she gets about it.

It is a meaningless, ridiculous thing.

Are you being sarcastic? If not, I don't know how you can

say this and mean it.

Every year Bama gets the highest ranked players, and has the highest ranked classes. And every year they compete for a national championship.

I'm pretty sure that blows your theory out of the water.

Missouri competed for the SEC championship this year.

Alabama was home for that. :)

division either did not pay enough attention to recruiting services, or the ones that did (UGA) had too many injuries to overcome. Bama was 1 second away from going to OT, which may have put them into the SECCG. That's comparing apples to bananas.

Everyone on Mizzou's schedule had better recruiting rankings

UGA, SCAR, UT, Florida... etc etc.

Plus I wasn't even talking about team rankings. I am talking about player rankings. But team rankings are dumb too.

Now you go and manipulate statistics to fit your argument

The premise here is that if Clemson recruits the highest ranked recruits, then our classes will be higher ranked, and we will dominate college football. You cannot deny any of that.

Your last post was not a common sense approach. It was

a tangly, sticky ball of mess.
Alabama didn't dominate the recruiting rankings until AFTER they became a power. Recruiting services retroactively manipulate their rankings to appear close to the general quality of the teams.

Oregon's rankings were in the toilet until they were a real power for a few years. Mizzou shot into space as soon as they joined the SEC. UGA, Florida and Bama are always high because they have the most subscribers. It's safe to keep Bama at the top now.

And, again, my main point in the OP was to trash the obviously bogus practice of ranking players after their JR. Such a thing is impossible and worthless.

Prior to winning the1st of 3 NC's in 09, Bama had two straight number one classes. Prior to.

Mizzou has not had a decently ranked recruiting class in forever, including their two classes since joking the SEC. Oregon is rarely ever, even the past 5 years in the top 15 let alone top 10. Bama has an interesting stat going for them under Saban. They have never recruited a 5starplayer at Bama under Saban that has not been a first round NFL pick. Ever. Interesting stuff.

Still... would you rather have Mizzou talent or Bama talent?

[1]
Posted: Feb 7, 2014 3:24 PM

I think we all know the answer to that. Missouri is a fluke on the side of lesser talent, while teams like Texas, FSU (up until the last couple years), and Miami are flukes on the higher talent side. The point is, those are exceptions to the rule: better talent means more wins.

2019 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg

Better talent does mean more wins. But Recruiting services

Posted: Feb 8, 2014 12:57 PM

are not good enough (or thorough enough) at evaluating talent on their own to the point that something as extremely specific as rankings make any sense.

Recruiting services rely on the attention recruits get from schools. It is not an honest, scientific process, like they would have you believe. It's playing with people's heads to create an illusory way for people to involve themselves with football year round.

Name the last CFB team to win a National Championship that did not consistently have top ten or better ranked recruiting classes every year.

Alabama's first of the last three and Auburns when they had Cam. Dude^^^ up there had a point they started recruiting heavily after they started winning

According to rivals recruiting data base, Bama won the NC in 09,11 and 12. Their four class ranks immediately prior to their 1st NC in 2009 were #11,#10,#1,#1. After the 09 NC, they preceeded to be ranked #4,#1,#1,#1. Bama had the top ranked recruiting class in the nation two straight years before winning it all in 2009.

Auburn won it all in 2010, and their class ranks prior to that NC were #4,#19,#20,#7,#9.

Fsu won it all in 2014, their recruiting rankings prior to their NC were #10,#5,#2,#10,#7,#9.

UF won it in 06 and 08. Prior to the 06 NC, their recruiting rankings were #2,#7,#14,#2. they were #1 in 07 and #3 in 08 prior to the second NC.

LSU won the NC in 03 and 07. Their average ranked class throughout all of those years and the three prior was #7.

USCw won it in 2004 with an average class ranking of #4 in the years prior to and during their two appearances in the NCG.

Texas won it in 2005 and their 4 class ranks prior to winning that NC were #6,#1,#10,#12.

I don't know what more to say. My original question stands. Name the last school to win a NC that did not recruit consistently in the top 10.

Thank your for the research. Case closed. Everyone enjoy

The answer is GT and Colorado in 1990. Prior to that, BYU did it in 1984. So in the past 30 years it has been done twice. Never in the BCS era.

Considering the rankings of players change based on who

Posted: Feb 8, 2014 12:49 PM

they are recruited by and committed to means that they are doing a good job of keeping you hooked. It's a magic trick that you are falling for.

And again, the original topic of this thread was how silly and futile it is to rank individual players one by one, especially when they are juniors.

Only half of our 5 stars have panned out. And our best players on defense are 3 stars are less just as often as not.

Like Vegas, recruiting services know how to create the illusion that investing in them is a good decision. You buy it, I don't. Using their manipulated numbers doesn't prove anything.

I just prefer watching film...as I'm sure the coaches do

I'm no expert on evaluating talent, but sometimes it appears rankings are skewed when you look at the level of competition these kids play against. Just look at Hyatt and Nkemdichee....both highlight videos look great but more often than not, Nkemdichee levels a OL that's probably barely 200Lbs. Yet Hyatt's highlight has him burying Nkemdichee and Lorenzo Carter...that's how you make a highlight video. Show them going against the best competition...

Which is exactly why ranking players is a complete joke.

Posted: Feb 8, 2014 12:59 PM

The ONLY reason it's done is because there is a financial demand for it. People want something more specific and tangible than is available in real life. They want another medium of being a fan. So they participate in a farce.
