Do yourself a favor and read the book. The movie is mediocre, but the books are great. It's also one of the rare movies that is more enjoyable after you read the book.

Good movie with a good plot. It is the first in a trilogy that grow. The book is even better, though.

My daughter (15) is a huge fan of books and movie, she IS Catness right down to the archery skills. She talked me into to watching it. "Kinda nerdy"? Yeah maybe but also chilling when you realize that the story line could be a look into the future of our country - a small but powerful and privileged elite living above the law and being supported by a large suppressed population of indentured servants dependent on the whim of those elite for their very existence.
Try viewing it again from that perspective

the 'future of America' possibility. It's something you can't 'unrealize' and it's a very real possibility.

Filmed almost entirely in the mountains of western NC

I watched the movie and thought it looked familiar. Come to find out it was filmed almost entirely within a 30 minute drive from my house (which is only 1 hour 15 minutes from Clemson). I may be biased, but gorgeous area!
As for the movie, I think it's hit or miss with most people. I liked it. There were a couple cheesy parts, but on the whole, I thought it was pretty well made. If nothing else, it's worth a watch just to see what all the hype was about and to determine whether or not you want to see the sequels.

Read the books!!! Much better than the movie. I read all three within a short time frame. The movie leaves a lot out of the story and you can be scratching your head if you don't know the background. It's an easy read and I don't remember one curse word in all three books. Book number 2 (Catching Fire) is really slow until about midway through the book. Enjoy.

Don't know what about my response to "kinda nerdy" suggests that I took anything personally. On the contrary, i tend to agree. Consider: no ef bomb in every other line of dialogue, no gratuitous sex or exploitation of women, adolescent love triangle and a relatively low body count. I'd say that qualifies for "kinda nerdy" these days.
I was actually suggesting that you and others who have or might consider viewing the film look beyond the escapist/fantasy aspects to what appears to me to be a deeper message. I was incensed by the arrogance of the elitist city dwellers and how much it resembles that of our "leadership" in Washington, DC.
So do you agree with me or is your skin too thin?

Good point and totally agree. The movie borrows that Orwellian theme but it does demonstrate the necessity of "mass media to control the masses"
Much more to this movie (books too) than SCI-FI

they left out parts and made changes that were disappointing. I do think that having read the books first made the movie more enjoyable. They casted well but felt like they fell short in a number of scenes. The second movie will have a different director and the success of the first should bode well for improvements in making the next one.
