Anyone heard Spurrier would have taken UNC job if offered?

I was told that had UNC not kept Bunting for another year that Spurrier would likely have been in Chapel Hill for the last 9 years and not in Columbia.

I started thinking what this might have meant had that happened........

As much everyone may hate him, Spurrier would have built UNC into a top 10 team and he would have done it much quicker there and by doing so I think the perception of ACC football would be different today. Mack Brown proved UNC can be built into a top 5 team. It's possible Spurrier could have played in a NC game at UNC by now since Brown was building to that before he left.

I think Bowden would have still hung around for as long as he did and Dabo would still be the coach today, but Dabo would be playing a SCAR team that is likely on coach #2 since the Holtz era.

So had that hire happened, maybe there are 3 top 10 teams in the ACC today......the ACC has a different perception nationally due to UNC success over the past 5-6 years........the SEC isn't held in the same esteem.....the four in a row never happened and Clowney is wearing orange.

Wrong! You can say a lot of things about Spurrier, and I'll probably agree with 90% of them, but the man has never been caught cheating. I think that all of his peers, in both the ACC and the SEC, would tell you that, even those who despise him both personally and professionally.

Honestly, if Spurrier had come to Clemson in 2005, we'd probably have another NC by now! If he can win consistently in that sinkhole, think what he would have done with our facilities and recruiting capabilities. He knows how to get new facilities built, and also how to increase donations. He said on Sirius the other day that when he came, SC had one donor giving 1M yearly...now it's 10 of them. Hate him or not, he's done one helluva job at every college stop!

He has, but they are on probation now, albeit a weakened down version, probably due to sec standards. I do believe Urban Meyer inherited some issues at UF when he followed stevie, too, but I really don't care that much. stevie is a great X's and O'S coach, but he still is a jerk. I am very glad we never had him as our coach. JMO. I'd hate to spend my time trying to defend his lack of character just because he wins.

The usc football team is on probation. He is the head football coach. The transgressions occurred while he was head coach.

Agreed! My point is that Spurrier has the reputation (except around here, of course) as being squeaky clean at Duke, Fla., and SC. Yes, they're on probation, but Spurrier was never named in the NCAA report. Look it up!

No, I get that, and I know it happened under his watch. However, I heard Danny Ford say that he was in violation of NCAA rules b/c he took a player to the dentist on the weekend. Point being, Spurrier has never been found guilty of anything personally. Is Kevin Sumlin a cheater if Johnny Manziel is found guilty of signing autographs for money? What about 10 years ago when an overzealous Tiger booster gave summer jobs to potential recruits from Greer or Gaffney? Was that Bowden's fault, or could he have done anything to prevent it-yet Clemson was cited by the NCAA? The more you delegate responsibilities, the more chance you stand of having someone screw-up, and big-time college coaches have to depend on others for almost all logistical situations. I stand by my statement that Spurrier is not viewed as a "cheater" by his peers and his coaching enemies. Ask Bobby Bowden, or Mark Richt, or Ray Goff, or even Dabo, in private. I get it that this board hates Spurrier for obvious reasons, but he does have a reputation for running a clean program. Bobby Knight was a jerk on a level beyond Spurrier (believe it or not,LOL), but none of his enemies could accuse him personally of cheating.

Must be, but actually football coaches at any school (including Clemson) have very little influence on an athlete's housing. Clemson probably has 5-15 associate AD interns dealing with housing, cafeteria comps, medical issues, family comps, etc., plus 2 or 3 compliance officers just for football. If they slip up, it's Dabo's name on the tab.

Wait - so Dabo is responsible but not SOS?

9-10 players were living in the Whitney and SOS had no idea?

Let's go back and read my post, shall we? The issue I'm arguing is not if they're on probation (they are), or if Spurrier, or Dabo, is held responsible (they are). It is nigh impossible for any coach to keep up with a 15 man basketball team after hours--much less a football team. I can promise you that no college football coach knows where all of his players are living! Do you really believe that all of the Tiger football team lives at the residences where they are assigned? Surely you are not that naive? If you really believe that, then you have never been around collegiate athletes.

Is the Whitney really a 5 star hotel?

Posted: Aug 6, 2013 4:12 PM

It may be a nice hotel for Columbia, but it doesn't compare to 5 star hotels in big cities. I thought stars were on a nationwide scale, not city-wide. Don't really know the hotel industry very well though, I could be wrong. If it is really a 5 star, they might want to recheck that ranking...

Answering your question, a program can very easily be placed on probation without a coach's foreknowledge of the situation. Look no further than a former coach at Clemson for your answer. Some of his coaches were in serious non-compliance, but they also noted that he was unaware of the situation, and they basically betrayed his trust. If you ever tried to wade through the NCAA compliance manual, you would certainly understand the point I'm making.

I believe Clowney would have gone somewhere else anyway, because we would have required he go to prep school. As it now appears, he may have been admitted to UNC and put in their Special Ed. group, and he may be on track to graduate by now, especially if spurlid were their coach. As I seem to remember, he even had usuc's standards for admission lowered to accommodate some of his players.

Time to let that old lame lie go, Clemson and SC admission standards for football players are exactly the same. Don't believe me, then call your AD's office and they will tell you. Had Clowney committed to Clemson, he'd be admitted and playing.

Facts are a problem for you. USC's standards were above those required by the NCAA, and those used by Clemson! Spurrier did gripe, becuase a palyer who met NCAA standrads was denied admission, that is absolutely true. So we lowered our standards to meet yours.
Clowney would be admitted to Clemson, so it is time to quit paying that card.

look at the pre-season top-10. now, how many losses would it take a team to completely drop out of the top-25? see how easy that is.
for you to state, and really think, that sec requirements are as stringent as the acc's are, you are fooling yourself.

heavy machinery or driving a semi on the nations highways......

Good grief boy---one of the main reasons chickentech withdrew from the ACC was because the conference had voted a couple of years prior to raise the SAT requirement for athletes

First off, I am not a boy.
Second, you are going back over 30 years, and even with that you conveniently leave out a lot. But lets just deal with today, or at least the last 10 years. Entrance requirements are the same for football players at both schools. Period.

I have ignored the moron you addressed, so I couldn't (really didn't care to) see his lame response. You are so right, though, but they don't get it. They are wannabe's in every sense of the word. Just think about it. They left the ACC 40 or so years ago to get away from the academic and other requirements, and it isn't until now they have gotten on anyone's radar, and that's due more to conference affiliation and being on the East side of their conference that has happened, that they have amounted to much. They do also have a good X's and O's coach, even if he is the biggest jerk East of the Mississippi.

I'm not sure how you may think I was insinuating that? I was implying that had UNC been a top program going back 5 years ago then there is a different perception about the ACC today; because if they were winning 11 games every year then it is quite likely there would have been a national championship appearance or two by an ACC team.

If the ACC is getting hyped for its football then the SEC is getting less hyped.....there is only so much airtime available for hype on ESPN.

Some of you should really check into facts more. ACC schools overall have a higher rank on average than SEC schools.

However, football / athletic standards are set by the NCAA. USC had standards higher than many and Spurrier said, how can I recruit a guy who meets NCAA regs and can go to the big schools yet USC will not admit him??

They changed them in the last 8 years or so to meet NCAA regs rather than be higher.

Now overall student body for USC and Clemson have consistently progressed in SAT standards as well as overall academic standards according to many studies and those can be found simply by a google search of incoming freshman standards for both USC and Clemson. Most would be surprised to find that they are pretty similar just as they were and have been since at least the early 90s

Clowney at Clemson, are you kidding me?

[2]
Posted: Aug 4, 2013 4:14 PM

We're Clemson, a model of academic excellence and athletic superiority. We would never have signed someone like Clowney. Dabo is all class; he recruits smart, athletic, Christian men, not brain dead thugs. I've read all the post on TigerNet condemning Clowney's academic shortcomings and character flaws. No way Clowney would ever have been Tiger.

Go Tigers!
