Anti-Trump conservatives like CSO, camgee, flow, and Obed:

Could y’all support a centrist dem like Hickenlooper or Bullock against Trump? Or, will you go 3rd party again?

Assuming y’all went 3rd party in 16 or just wrote someone in.

So, I'm a conservative now? I was recently called a liberal.

Mar 15, 2019, 11:23 AM

I do not like centrists. They are essentially tethered to the status quo for practical, political reasons.

I am a libertarian.

IMO, libertarians are conservative.***

So being pro gay marriage, and anti-Islamophobia,

wanting to take money out of politics, non interventionist, secular-minded and being anti-crony capitalism is conservative?

Might want to tell conservatives that. I don't think they would agree. Which is why I get called liberal on here by some.

Libertarian is a different kind of approach to American politics than either major party.

The defining issues are always changing.

I support (and always have) gay marriage, legalization of weed, keeping religion completely out of government and politics, and for the most part, non-interventionist military and foreign policy (though I believe this is a difficult and tricky position). Traditionally, these have been contrary to conservative positions; yet we are in an environment now where one can hold these positions and still be labeled as not only a conservative, but a right-wing nut.

That's an oversimplification

and so is this...

Remember bill maher used to be (or still is?) a self-described libertarian. But, most wouldn't say he and Rand Paul or Paul Ryan have much in common. Usually when someone describes themselves as something based on a political ideology, they really have one or two core issues they are linking with that ideology that they agree with. (I don't actually think Paul Ryan is a libertarian)

Liberals tend to value freedoms of an individual's privacy and morality (e.g. gay rights) but want government oversight in business and the economy.

Conservatives tend to be the opposite in that they want government oversight in morality and behaviors (e.g. gay rights) but limited government oversight in the economy and business.

Libertarians tend to bridge the two issues to a degree and believe that the government should be incredibly limited in both individuals private lives and with economic issues.

Authoritarians want government control over both moral and economic issues.

Useful chart:

Bill Maher is a democrat. He is NOTHING like a libertarian.

Mar 16, 2019, 11:25 AM

Rand Paul is a libertarian leaning republican.

Paul Ryan is a definite mainstream republican. NOT a libertarian at all.

If you don't support Trump, you're a raging liberal.

At least, that's what people here tell me.

Possibly....

I've never voted for a dem for federal office, but this could be the first time, if they put forward someone in the middle with executive experience and Hickenlooper and Bullock both check that box.
