Will UGA create a change in the playoffs?

Jan 10, 2018, 3:40 PM

This year was unusual how UGA and Bama both made the 4 team playoff. Going forward do you think the NCAA will expand to 6 or 8 teams to accommodate 2 teams from the same conference? It will be interesting to see if SEC bias exposes itself with the apparent rise of UGA.

No. The Committee needs to...

The committee won't entertain expansion. Did you see the attendance at some of this season's bowl games? Think if they added another playoff level. How many Clemson fans would travel (for instance) to Arizona, New Orleans and Atlanta within three weeks of each other and afford the ticket cost of $450, $500 and $1,500 tickets (not including travel and lodging expenses)? If fans only choose one of the three options, you're splitting the fan base into three.

Rather than doing this, the Committee needs to stop talking out of both sides of their mouths. "Championships matter, Oklahoma and the Big XII." So, the Big XII holds a defacto repeat championship game (that no one cares about). Then they reward a school that neither won their conference or their division outright with a bid twice (2017 Alabama and 2016 Ohio State). Either make conference championships a requirement to be selected or don't talk about the championship games as a reason to select or not select a team.

Alabama showed that they were the best team on Monday night. But what was their consequence for losing to Auburn, the West Division champ? Nothing. What was their consequence for not playing a championship game? Nothing. If Clemson hadn't had to play Miami in Charlotte for the ACC championship, does Clemson look a little crisper and win the Sugar Bowl? I don't know.

The reason I say all of this is, people are pushing for an expanded playoff because they saw a #4 team win it all. The question should be, how did a #4 team that was so good almost not make it in? It was because they lost to Auburn who beat Georgia. And if wins and losses matter, then the question answers itself.

The playoff will expand when .. and ONLY when .. the SEC gets 0 teams in. If that happens, it will expand so quick it will make your head spin.

Unusual???

Jan 10, 2018, 4:52 PM

Don't count on that being unusual. Look for it being the norm. Especially if Bama fails to win the SEC again.

Another point.

If Wisconsin, Auburn and/or Ohio State had taken care of business, Alabama would be the ones saying the playoff needed to expand and Clemson might have found themselves in the national title game and potentially the second trophy in a row.
