Dabo in Washington Post

The timing of this is a bit suspect but overall it's not

Jul 24, 2020, 11:16 AM

an unfair article.

I think there have been and are going to be ramifications for the Pearman stuff, Dabo's initial reaction and first statement. Whether it affects the program long term is unclear.

Re: Dabo in Washington Post

Jul 24, 2020, 11:33 AM

Good to be recognized in the Post. This isn’t a negative article but it could cause some to be uneasy about things at Clemson. I always feel comfortable that Coach S will handle these matters correctly. It’s good to have McCovey and Spiller and Davis and others on the staff to work with Dabo. It’s a changing world and you can adjust .... or not. I have faith in the leadership at my university.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the intent of the article is to make sure we keep a close

Jul 24, 2020, 11:49 AM

eye on Swinney b/c he's probably not trustworthy....its a toned down hit job. The only people that speak ill of DAbo are usually people who don't have a clue and have an agenda to push. Until he does something to the contrary i'll disregard negative articles like these.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We can ignore them, but they will damage recruiting. And you

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

its really just sad how broken this world is...

Jul 24, 2020, 11:45 AM

how we go after good people because they don't sell out for our politicized structured message. "This is no time for christian testimony" is one quote in there by McCorvey. I sincerely disagree. This IS the time to speak truth. But even Jesus said that people will come after you if you speak truth b/c its counter productive for them. I agree that it IS the time to drag those racists misdeeds of our past out in the light and kill them (to show our black brothers and sisters that they are indeed family) and its also THE time co-mingle speaking truth that the World we live in is broken and will forever be broken. Its something we have to make sure we all recognize and are willing to deal with on a continuing basis. Its been that way since the beginning. Its not new. So we can't be shifting in the wind after every tragedy and if we see that happening we have to strong/smart enough to call it what it is.

What DABO preaches is focusing on our commonalities instead of what separates and divides us. This message really kills any hope of a socialist movement. Which is why we constantly have articles like these in our daily news feed. The goal of this new wave of progressivism is to make sure we question good people that have good motives so that the public won't trust anyone not totally committed to their cause.

This whole article is about questioning Dabo. Not really spelling it out like that but making sure you know his motives are not as good as he makes out like they are. It our new propagandized journalism these days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed El......

Jul 24, 2020, 12:04 PM

I was a bit disappointed in some of the comments--I'll just leave it at that. I would take Xavier Brewer's advice, if you have something to say to the man, do it directly instead of going to the media.

Unless I missed it, while Pearman was completely wrong to repeat the word, there is a difference in context in the way he repeated it. That should've been explained in the article--but of course, it wasn't. Article also doesn't talk about the Call Me Mister program/internship opportunities/life skills or any other the myriad of things CDS has done for ALL his players WAY BEFORE this Floyd incident occurred. I would stack up CDS and the programs he has HAD in place for his players (again, BEFORE the Floyd incident) against any program in the country. Actions, done way before all this, speak much louder IMO

I tried to tell you guys- recruiting will suffer...

Jul 24, 2020, 11:46 AM

If black parents like myself don’t feel or believe that not only Dabo but the clemson culture(like we experience in TigerNet) have their interests in heart and understand how and why young black men lives matter- this program will only be on the defensive. I have had this same convo with numerous parents of black athletes- like the trotters. With my clemson gear on most of the time- I’m getting asked all kinds of stuff and challenged about whether clemson fans opposed the name change and black lives matter STATEMENT- not organization. It starts with the leadership for sure- but the fan base cannot have it both ways. Black folks are not blind to what clemson folks believe- and we black people, have a well developed sophisticated-survival instinct level understanding of culture and race. I know it’s frustrating and hard and makes some angry as hell but It’s time to listen and change or lose a generation or two of young men to other schools.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am proud of the program and culture Dabo has built.

Jul 24, 2020, 11:58 AM

He has helped so many young black men not only get a great college education, but also improve their football skills so that they can take football as far as possible. He has done these things while teaching them how to be respectful, grown men.

Articles like the one in the Post seem to minimize that, instead focusing on a shirt Dabo wore or something he said (or didn't say). It is frustrating to dissect those few things the reporter deems "questionable," while not giving nearly enough credit for the many many things he's done exceedingly well.

The recruit's mother's statements rubbed me the wrong way. If we lose recruits because their parents have unreasonable expectations and standards of our coaching staff, then so be it. I'd much rather have our integrity intact than pander to the woke social justice warriors and their largely racist tactics. If doing so costs us a top 5 recruiting class, or results in less success on the field, so be it.

It would be yet another step for me in losing interest in college football.

So do you look at the content of character or do you

Jul 24, 2020, 12:01 PM [ in reply to I tried to tell you guys- recruiting will suffer... ]

look to the words of progressives who have a clear agenda to push? Misinformation and twisting someones intent is the enemy, some call this propaganda. Who can combat that? You can tell that Trotter's mother is listening to how the media has framed the situation.

DAbo's take is framed around the gospel. And not framed around BLM. And that's the problem. His initial answers to those questions about the tragedy were spot on from a biblical perspective. But thats not what a progressive world wants.

But from a content of character perspective, where's his flaw? Id look at that before i listened to some click-baiter from the Washington Post. How about you?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not mutually exclusive to think Dabo has good character

Jul 24, 2020, 12:15 PM

but to question whether he truly understood or understands the perspective of the young black men he's coached and coaches.

Whether you think it's important or not it clearly weighs heavily on the young men we're recruiting and their families.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok then, how would you expect him to if he's never lived it?

Jul 24, 2020, 2:20 PM [ in reply to It's not mutually exclusive to think Dabo has good character ]

He's lived through oppression of being poor and having an alcoholic father. He can speak to that with expertise but he can't speak to racism like someone who has lived it. So why is there a push in the media to knock him down and act like he's supposed to be a spokesman against racism? Its b/c he's a successful white male and an added bonus he's a "born-again evangelical." That's why Dabo is getting this bad press.

"Racist white guy" is just the tool bc its easy to sell. As long as us as consumers understand the game that's being played (in the media) then i'm good with them writing National Enquirer type articles, who cares. But if you're telling me Clemson will lose recruits b/c of the rhetoric then we gotta start making sure everyone else isn't getting played. Nobody wants anyone to suffer by being victim of blatant racism, which is why i said if there is true racism out there then we gotta drag it into the light and kill it.

But its gotta be blatant and real like Floyd or Rodney King. Not read into and cast with a broad brush. Because if we're reading every situation in life with racist colored glasses then EVERYTHING can and will be cast as racist. Which alot of what is in the news these days is just that. And it does way more harm than good."The boy who cried wolf" comes to mind. Hopefully we can have REAL dialogue about these issues and not the broad brush/insinuation dialogue that is cast by the author of this article.

Of course I am biased, but it appears Dabo has done as much if not more for young black men than any college coach in America. He doesn't run you through his program and forget about you. The proof is in how he chases after these guys AFTER they leave to push them to get their degree.

If recruiting suffers, let it suffer.

Jul 24, 2020, 4:09 PM [ in reply to I tried to tell you guys- recruiting will suffer... ]

If you want to steer your son away from a Dabo Swinney lead program because he didn't say exactly what you wanted to say when you wanted him to say, for goodness sake do it. If your son would have contributed to Clemson, then Clemson will suffer...but your son will have missed out. Your son would miss out on a coaching staff with more sincere love in their hearts for all their players than he would have found anywhere else. But hey...gotta get the PR just perfect, amirite?

I will take a decade of mediocrity if the alternative is that Dabo Swinney has to do and say everything exactly in the manner to appease the BLM movement. I know he cares deeply for his players...heck I know he cares deeply for all people. I know he takes care of them. I know he would never do wrong by one of his players and the parents who send their kids to Clemson know that too. If you have this same convo with numerous parents of black athletes and you know Dabo, and you can't defend him or explain why he is the best place for their young men to develop, then don't. We'll get the players who want to be at Clemson and whose families want them to be at Clemson, and that is who will get the love, support and development from the best coaching staff in college football.

I defend Dabo and Clemson all the time- you missed the point!!

Jul 24, 2020, 8:20 PM

The fact that this whole thing has caused me to have to defend the team I love and a coach and program and faith I respect is difficult and more weighted by what seems (see the pulses) to be a majority of Clemson folks who hate and despise what so many black families and young men find hope and comfort- and that is not in exclusion of their faith... many are faithful believers Who love country and family just like Dabo and others on here but have a different view on the way forward for black people in this country and a different view about George Floyd, breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and what that means for them. They may have as faithful Christians with strong family values different views on flags, statues and response to what is going on racially and politically. It’s just hard when the majority in this board are at odds with them and at odds even with Trevor Lawrence our QB who stood under a back lives matter banner and even used the phrase- it might be a generational thing?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, you just made the point. Which is that

Jul 25, 2020, 10:09 AM

Dabo MAY have a different approach to advancing our culture than BLM does (and here I say “may” because I do not speak for Dabo Swinney). Dabo isn’t saying what he believes and then saying “and if you don’t believe exactly the same way, there’s no place for you on my team.” But you seem to think that black athletes insist he say things exactly in line with the BLM message or they’ll walk away.

No one is asking you to defend Dabo or the program, so I’d rather not get into the “Woe is HBROWN, what a burden you all are putting on me” thing. Dabo will tell the recruits what he believes and what he will do. And then he will do it. You’re not obligated to do anything.

I can’t believe the way your mind works. “Trevor said it...what’s wrong with Dabo that he can’t?” Who thinks like that?

Jul 24, 2020, 11:55 AM

If we only make this about a liberal attack on our faith or way of life- we will build a defensive wall against our heart and ability to repent, listen change and love. This is at its core a made in the image and likeness of God issue- the political excuse will let your heart rot in the darkness- please friends- I just want one of us to show empathy for what Mrs. Trotter and her so must be feeling- do you get that???!! Forget the conspiracy crap and look past that- ask yourself- why does she and other parents feel uneasy? Are they inferior in their emotions or thinking while you have it figured out and they are confused??!! No way it’s that easy. Why might these black parents feel uneasy about the Dabo-Pearman thing even after a clear explanation from Dabo? Are they tricked by liberal media or just stupid- no!! They know the facts just like you and me but are hurting beyond that- ask yourselves why instead of getting defensive and attacking.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you misunderstood. I"m with you 100% on empathy

Jul 24, 2020, 2:46 PM [ in reply to Please- this is a human issue not political for us- ]

to stomp out hatred and racism based on skin color. Are kidding me? That has no place in this country in any capacity. If we have police officer, or a teacher, or a coach, or a pastor who has hatred in his heart then lets get them out! Call them out, with evidence of malice, and remove them from their post immediately. That's why this cop in the Floyd case is in jail for a long time. Justice is served.

The political part is real. And its there and they're using black tragedies to seize power. Its written in memoirs and books of how to do this properly (another story for another day.) This model that BLM is carrying out is using these steps to a T. Whats happening is they're using a tragedy as their key to get in. Whether you care about that or not it doesn't change it.

And that's the sad part. They're using a worthy cause to get in on the backs of those they truly don't care about. And MS Trotter i'm sure has had a conversations with Dabo of her concerns and this is a not a care in her mind anymore about him but the words she used in this article were verbatim what was going around the media-sphere about him 4 weeks ago. Did we not learn about the Pearman case? did we not find out what happened and how it was handled internally? Did we not read how all parties were satisfied? Were you still unsatisfied? Do you still think Pearman used this term in a racist way? Or did he have a lapse in judgement of how to teach? All you will see in these articles is that a white coach said the N word. And context will never be explained. Why is that? To bring it down and force the agenda.

You can't just stop at the accusation of racism. Dig into it. If you find its there, then its time to deal with it. It has no business being in our country anymore. So lets eradicate it. But lets make sure its real before we condemn and ruin good people.

I'll bet they never mentioned that he athlete in question was satisfied with the apology and resolution at the time, or that his father worked on the staff and has been on the staff for many years. It is just sad. Also the context of the fact that he wasn't calling anyone that word, but saying that it shouldn't be used by the athletes.

Nor does it mention all the programs (Call Me Mister, internships, etc....) that CDS has either supported or put into place YEARS before all this started--when it wasn't PC. That was done from CDS heart...to actually help players.....not to try make his program look good to capitalize on a tragic situation.

Of course, everyone has room to grow (Dabo included) in understanding the experiences of AAs and how to be a better person--we are all on that journey. However, if anyone is 'confused" about Dabo..they should look to his ACTIONS way before all of this. I would suggest watching this video (very apropos here) again to reacclimate yourself to the "kind" of coach we have....

Also the out statement by Wilkenson and Ferral as they were exiting the championship stage in Santa Clara. But there are people that want to bring Dabo's program down. Namely, opponents, media feeding frenzy looking to create news to extend a news story, Finebaum.

We really don't know if this has cost us in recruiting yet. Foreman decommitted for a completely different reason before the Pearman incident came out. WaPo has an agenda and prints what fits their narrative. When I see this as a source I skip
It. Trash journalism if it even qualifies for journalism at all.

A Far Leftist. They have, are, and will be a LEFTIST HACK DRIVEN RAG! The Goal (just like it’s been for decades) of the “State Run Media” is to manipulate and Influence thought. I do not remember the Author of this quote, but it is well stated: “The Truth is not hard to kill, but, a Lie Well Told is Immortal”!

Obviously you are a mole. The "necks" did nothing to anyone, they were on a public road, drove through and left. There is a segment on this post that want Clemson destroyed at all cost, not necessarily for football, but for politics. You want to see America destroyed also. Clemson under the leadership of Dabo, achieved a reputation as a place that was special where athletes through hard work and keeping your nose clean could succeed. That does not fit the mold of the current counter culture. So now this must also be destroyed. Sin is but for a season. God almighty still is on "his" throne and good will ultimately will win over evil!

This article misses reality in that we all are human and we all are messed up when compared to perfection. Most of us strive to treat others the way we would like to be treated but even in our own households and family we struggle at times with that. If we are hungry, tired, wore out, spent, upset, sick etc. we treat the ones we love the most by reaction because we are human. When we are feeling great and totally in control we are so loving, caring, joyful, exciting, gifted and just incredible humans.

If we assume humans are perfect we are lying to ourselves.

The truth is we can be so judgmental of others knowing the fact none of us do life perfectly and this doesn’t speak to our true intentions because the majority of us strive for perfection and love others even those not in our family the way we want to be loved.

In reality, we can twist words because of our opinions or agenda that we ourselves can’t and haven’t lived up to. I can ask myself have I loved others the way I want to be loved honestly and I can find many examples of how I put others first and went out of my way to be good and even denied my needs for others but I also can find many times that I failed and most of the time the failure was because I ignored or failed to look at or ask about others needs because my flesh was hungry, tired, selfish, wore out, spent, upset, sick etc.

The truth is we are all human and we aren’t and never have been perfect. I make mistakes, you make mistakes, Gamecocks make the most mistakes lol, we have to talk about our mistakes honestly and admit them to one another, we also have to ask others to forgive us for our mistakes.

The hardest one for all humans to do in our heart is to Truly forgive, let it go, not continually bring it up, not hold it over or against them ever again. We can love others the way we want to be loved and forgive others the way we want to be forgiven but it takes effort, time and deep deep love.

The key ?? to changing our hearts and unifying us no matter who we are or where we came from is in learning to forgive others the way we want to be forgiven. We first must realize we all do stuff we need forgiveness for in our relationships with our family, friends, Tigernet family, state, country and fellow Americans. It’s the key to learning how to forgive forever.

Forgiveness is the first step to unconditional Love. Have you forgiven someone today?

Extremely well said HS! I heard a gentleman yesterday that had written and article about the cemetery in Anderson that had been vandalized and BLM written on headstones and some overturned, etc. A black gentleman, of his own accord, was out there pressure washing the graffiti of the headstones. They talked about what all of this going on meant and ultimately agreed that it is not a matter of black lives matter but "broken lives matter" ..... and we are all broken. Amen!
