You mean Cassius Clay

Sep 15, 2015, 12:08 PM

I'm not into the whole "Muslims get to do whatever they want, including make up names" thing.

Willing to wager that he's so excited by the Papa John's crowd that he can't stop shaking.

Too soon?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's 12:07 so...

Sep 15, 2015, 12:12 PM

I was over due a laugh. Timing is good.

lol..not to soon for me..

Sep 15, 2015, 12:57 PM [ in reply to You mean Cassius Clay ]

i dont look at him as some huge hero..dude dodged the draft then changed his name to keep from being caught..not exactly an american hero in my eyes

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then why didn't he change his name back later

Sep 15, 2015, 4:39 PM

why did he continue to defend Islam even into the post 9/11 era, making a rare public appearance with Will Smith even though he could barely speak because of his advanced Parkinson's disease?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he was a famous Boxer who announced his name change...

Sep 15, 2015, 5:40 PM [ in reply to lol..not to soon for me.. ]

And he didn't go on the run. Get a freaking clue

Re: he was a famous Boxer who announced his name change...

He also gave up his title and was facing the possibility of both prison time and never fighting again.

He ALSO knew, beforehand, that he wasn't going to get sent the front lines with a rifle in his hand. The Army wanted to use him as a PR man to sell the war and improve morale for the troops.

Still wouldn't go.

That wasn't cowardice, that was conviction. Agree with his stance or don't, but the guy paid a huge personal price and it took a lot of courage to stick the course in refusing to support what he considered an unjust war...and he was not exactly the only person in America to be against the Vietnam War or the draft at the time. He was also pretty much blacklisted in America until Howard Cosell - shockingly - stood up for him in the media. That situation easily could have stretched into one where his boxing license stayed suspended until well after he was too old to box. But his beliefs were obviously more important to him than money, his career, or the adulation of the public. The guy was the champ and he sat out over three and a half years...from age 25 to almost 29, during the prime years of a boxer's career. In the end, the Supreme Court unanimously exonerated him.

I do respect that.

That might be how revisionist tell it.

Sep 15, 2015, 7:06 PM [ in reply to he was a famous Boxer who announced his name change... ]

I remember hearing that he'd changed his name and been drafted about the same time. Strange how the draft made him and Lou Alcindor become suddenly religious. Neither said anything before about anything other than themselves and their sport. It wasn't as if either of them would have been sent to combat like the rest of us.

Clay lost a lot more going about this the wrong way than he would have had he gone about it the right way. The military wouldn't take Lou Alcindor for the cost of putting him in a uniform.

Now Elvis, he's an American hero. I preferred other music but he took the call and served. He never spent a day in Nam and nobody wanted him to.

The way we revise history to fit political rhetoric I suggest everyone listen to their grandparent for accurate information until they learn to ignore the school books and dig for information at the local library.

Actually, you're revising history. Cassius Clay changed his name to Mohammed Ali right after he KO'd Sonny Liston for the World Heavyweight title in 1964 at the age of 22. He was drafted and refused to be inducted in 1967, was convicted of draft evasion and was sentenced to 5 yrs in prison, fined $10,000 and banned from boxing for 3 years. He was exonerated by the U.S. Supreme in 1971.

Ali is a great American, a humanitarian and has been a committed Muslim since his conversion. He is and always has been a man of great integrity and conviction at great personal cost to himself.

The argument you just made, with all do respect, is the same old tired "white version" of the facts that were circulating in the '70's.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Never let facts get in the way of a good argument

Sep 16, 2015, 7:02 AM

Especially when that argument is an opportunity to denigrate a racial and/or religious minority.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And as for Kareem Abdul-Jabar

Are you also against calling William Swinney "Dabo"? And I'm not even going to address you cruel comment towards his Parkinson's disease. You sir, need to have some respect.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think I'll avoid the draft...

Sep 15, 2015, 12:10 PM

I mean the half time entertainment. It's a religious thing with me and it's politically incorrect to disrespect my religion.

sorry to disappoint the racists and race-baiters out there.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

careful, ali turned on joe calling him an uncle tom & worse.

Sep 16, 2015, 8:51 AM

joe was even called the white man's champion by some; there are those apologists that may label you anyway.

ali turned on his friend joe frazier. he turned on the man that plead his case in front of the nation & turned on the man that loaned ali money in his great time of need.

it wasn't until much later in their lives that ali offered a piddling apology.
