Why is the school in Statesboro GA called Georgia Southern?

It really isn't that far south on the Georgia map. If anything it should be named Georgia Eastern.

I guess it's kind of like living in Central, SC (way up here in the northwestern corner of the state)? Or the University of South Florida not being in the true southern part of FL?
