An 8 team Playoff would be terrible this year.

To the surprise of nobody who has foresight, an 8 team playoff would be a waste of time (as it always would). The top 3 teams are so much better than the rest.

agreed, I think the last 4-5 years have born this out. Every year 2-3 teams separate and nobody else matters or is even competitive. Look at ND, MSU, WASH, OKLA in the CFP...

i could not agree more!

As you say there is no year when it woulda ended been good, but we always have people that think there will be 8 one loss teams at the end of the year and that never comes to fruition. Prior to this year there have been exactly 2 one loss power 5 champs left out and they were Ohio state teams with blowout losses. The whole point of the playoff system was to make sure that the 2 best teams actually play each other every year and that’s exactly what’s happened.

I disagree. one year we might be a one loss team and then

I am 100% sure we'll be pining for 8+ teams. We are in rare air right now and can't really see the other side of the coin. In every sport, sometimes a team that doesnt appear to be one of the top 2 or 3 ends up winning the championship. No doubt those teams are extremely happy to have a chance. One day we just might be that team begging for a chance.

The regular season matters more in cfb than in any other sport and it should stay that way. 13-0 guarantees a playoff berth for power conference teams and 12-1 squads will only ever be jumped by other 12-1 teams.

Exactly Savage. We could have easily been knocked out and been complaining. On the other hand, I think this year it all works out anyway. The top 3 teams will be there. The rest I think would be undeserving this year.

We were a one-loss regular season team two of the last four years and I was not pining for an eight team playoff.

Four is perfect. Leave it alone.

Yeah 8 seems too many. 6 max, but not sure how that would even work.

Terrible every year

How would it impact the kids class attendance with an extra game stuffed in there right around exam time.

it's worked in 1-aa for decades.***

lot easier to schedule 10-15K attendance games quickly

you have to look beyond the game at the logistics behind the actual playing of the games.

A 1-AA game isn't much different than a NIT basketball game or an upper level high school playoff game. But it's hard, if not impossible, to get a 80-100,000 attended game planned in less than a week. All of the background workers, security, traffic control, travel, etc is a nightmare. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of workers needed.

If you say "NFL does it!" Yeah, they do. But teams know by midseason to start planning for playoff games. And they have LOTS more money and staffing, plus most have big-city resources and infrastructure to absorb a massive "sudden" event, like hotels and manpower, that places like Clemson do not.

Ask someone who is involved on how much work goes into prep for a Clemson home game. Being able to do that in a 5-day span is close to impossible.

I still like the idea of all P5 Champions getting in. And then 3 others. Just my 2 cents.

If you want all P5 Champs in, why do you have to add 3 more?

Just give the Top 3 ranked P5 Champs an automatic spot and let the bottom 2 ranked P5 Champs have a play-in game for the 4th spot.

We had an 8 team "playoff" already this year

The playoff will be expanded one day for tv ratings. They want to keep the nation involved.

Whether it is 4 teams or 64 teams, there is always going to be a bubble and unhappy teams that get left out. Unlike the NFL, NCAA football does not have a lot of parity at the top, so I don't think you will see a lot of 8th ranked teams winning it all.

Probably just added a significant voice to the case for

Not To Mention

And what would it do to the regular season? All of a sudden you can drop a game or 2 and still be in the hunt. Look - the people who don't think 4 games is fair don't know their history on how the national champion use to be decided. If they did they would know this is superior to anything the sport has ever had.
#1 was it and the rest were on the ROY bus. Even when the bowls came with their conference affiliations; there were no guarantees you would face a top 5 team. For Example, in 1981 NC year I believe Nebraska was #4 when we played them.
And that was an improvement on how it use to be when the sports writers from major markets just decided: much like they do with H.S. Football. It doesn't matter if a team over here would mop the floor with who they picked - if the writers said they were #1 that was it.
The BCS was a bit better - but then #3 through the rest were all p'd off.

Going to 4 was better than the 2 for BCS because every year about 4 teams maybe 5 have a legit shot at claiming to be the best! Not 8.

8 would ruin the sport and just get more SEC teams in b/c they would all play and lose to each other b/c they would all be ranked pre-season and get impressive wins(run on sentence). Maybe the days of the bowl games are near an end? 8 teams would mean you would have to modify that. Then the bowl games lose just about all meaning! What about championship games? Saw a scenario where the 1st round replaced the championship games in conferences. The conferences would lose out on the gate money and ad money for that. Play if after the Championship games? So, the best teams have to play a conference championship - then go play a top 8 team the next week - then get a mini-break before the semi-final? Hmmm.

even with 4, appears LSU and Ohio St are playing meaningless

games this weekend. Looks like both are in even with a loss.

Yep! B/C of the perceived strength of their league

Posted: Dec 1, 2019, 11:09 AM

I am not overly impressed with the Big 10. I think the SEC has some outstanding teams and is the best league. However, Alabama rolled through this same league by an average of nearly 30 points per game last season. Much like LSU is doing but with a defense that's not as good.

Those two teams get a pass even if they lose because of perception.

One minor point of disagreement, it would be terrible any year!
