Mack Brown stepping down as HC of Texas

Dec 10, 2013, 2:30 PM

according to SB Nation CFB.

I'm betting Saban is gone from Alabama

But, they wouldn't hire a coordinator to become their coach. Their ego wouldn't allow it. They'll buy the best coach they can

No but the concern is....

Dec 10, 2013, 3:08 PM

if Texas hires someone like Art Briles, Baylor would absolutely come after Morris and it is a job he would probably accept if offered.

I think they go after a head coach who has successfully competed at the highest level...NFL or high level college. I really think they go after Saban hard.

I don't think they go for Morris who is a coordinator only 4 years removed from high school coaching.

Gus would do great at Texas, but I think he has a huge buyout. Saban, oddly enough, may be cheaper.

other than a proven HC. They took a chance on Mack Brown when he was with UNC and he hasn't had the record/success they were hoping for.

They'll go after a big-name HC.

Although a distinct possibility....

Dec 10, 2013, 4:09 PM

if Briles accepts the Texas job, I think there is a better than 60% chance that Baylor would first offer the job to Philip Montgomery.

Montgomery's association with Art Briles dates back to their days at Stephenville High School. He has coached alongside Briles for fifteen seasons.

It is Montgomery who is largely responsible for Baylors recent success.

Would Morris go to Texas as an OC?

One of the names supposedly on the list is Strong. He would need a good OC and Morris is a Texas boy.

If the money was right. He would have a chance to run his offense in a real conference. Might be an interesting move.

Re: Serious question...

Dec 10, 2013, 3:13 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious question... ]

Morris has to leave as a HC or there is a hefty buyout. not that UTx can't pay it, but it would exceed what Morris may be worth. I don't see UTx buying into the HUNH system. They can recruit all positions at the highest level like Alabama, so they don't need to compensate for any deficiencies.

I don't think he can. I think his contract only allows him to leave for another team as a Head Coach.

Brown denies he is leaving

Dec 10, 2013, 3:19 PM

Reached by text in Florida, where he is on a recruiting trip, Brown denied that he is stepping down.

That was the same story when it was initially reported that Dodds was going to step down.

There is a Board of Regents meeting scheduled for Thursday in Austin. I believe it will be officially announced after the meeting.
