I offer you an example straight out of the NFL, and also I will use 20 points given up as an example of a "shot out" game.

Ridiculous

Much like Auburn did last year with their defense???

Oct 27, 2011, 4:09 PM

Auburn won purely based on their offensive power. Their defense was ranked just about where ours is now.

But then again, they are in the mighty SEC, so all hail to the SEC Gods!

All the pundits act like this situation can and will happen to Clemson...and Clemson alone. You don't see these type of articles for any other unbeaten.

What about Ok State
What about Stanford
What about Boise

Why is it always Clemson's problem, but nobody else seems to have the same problem.

And we've been in one, maybe 2 shootouts

Oct 27, 2011, 3:36 PM

Maryland for sure, and "maybe" FSU if you call it that.

AUburn, no shootout.
VT, no shootout.
BC, no shootout.
UNC, no shootout.

Honestly, it's a fine sentiment to say "Clemson's occasional lapse on defense may come back to bite them sometime", but to somehow use an example from the NFL and form the argument that all we are doing is winning shootouts is idiocy.

Actually, on the radio this morning, the talking heads were constantly calling Ok State "Chokie State" since they have such a reputation of blowing games.

Oct 27, 2011, 4:16 PM

this kiss our arses when it is all said and done. The longer we are in this, the more you will see ESPN and their minions ramp up their reasoning of why we don't belong there. Wait until before the Coots game. It will be an epic display of drooling on display for the SEC ending Clemson's dreams, and then it will be Virginia Tech is a much better team now and will take us down in the ACCCG.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What a crock of shytte

Oct 27, 2011, 4:19 PM

What does the play of the late 70's Chargers have to do with us?

Nothing.

Funny, the teams that won those "shootout" games against the Chargers were also involved in a a "shootout" game.

Yet they won.

Just like one of two teams does in every game, regardless of the score.

What the heck would make our upcoming games any more likely to be "shootouts" than the ones we already played (and won)? Why would we be less likely to win them than the others?

This is a ridiculous premise that is just cobbling together some football trivia and making some prediction out of it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Be careful with some of your wording.

Oct 27, 2011, 4:23 PM

"Just like one of two teams does in every game, regardless of the score."

That sounds way too familiar like a past coach used to say, "Half the teams lose on Saturday"
-Tommy Bowden

My response to that always is,
"We don't have to be one of them"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, half of the teams DO lose

Oct 27, 2011, 4:31 PM

So he was right.

However, unlike him, I didn't offer that as a lame excuse for us losing a game.

Rather, both teams in a "shootout" are in a "shootout," yet one of them win; therefore the premise that being in "shootouts" leads to losses is bunk.

Being in shootouts leads to losses for one of the teams involved, just like being in every other kind of game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My response was purely for humor. Hope I didn't offend you.***

So Clemson wont go undefeated because the San Diego Chargers lost some games? Thanks ESECPN.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That seems to be the gist of it

Oct 27, 2011, 4:32 PM

Flawless logic really.

Must be a Chicken fan.

I'll take GT, Wake and NC State before Auburn, FSU and VT anyday; doesn't the writer understand that the toughest part of our schedule is over. Still have to focus but he acts like we are beginning our "tough stretch"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

auburn last yr, ok/texas championship w/vince young, oklahom

Oct 27, 2011, 4:38 PM

this year, oregon, ok state, etc all win/won sans defense. our defense is going to surprise people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

only one of those teams has an offense worth talking about..

Oct 27, 2011, 5:42 PM

and we see them this week. ESPN really seem to be searching for a reason to criticize Clemson, at the expense of actually doing analysis.

That doesn't mean that it's a foregone conclusion that Clemson will win out, but I'm not really sure ESPN is on the ball.

I guess it can still be called a shootout, even though we came with the nose gun from an A10, and they brought a pea shooter. We win the shootouts too!!!!!!
