All Time Recruiting Gaffes? One that comes immediately to

mind is Alabama recruiting Bo Jackson. In interviews, Bo said he was told that it would probably be his junior year before he even saw the field at Bama. Pat Dye told him he would start right away. That is how Awbarn got what is arguably the best running back in college football history.
Anyone got similar stories?

fact that Devonte Holloman and Stephon Gilmore both decommitted and later became stars at Cooterville due to Tommy Bowden stepping down certainly set our program back defensively. Those two in no small way contributed to their infamous 5-Bomb streak.

Natty's, on a 6 game coot winning streak, ACC titles, 5 consecutive playoff appearances, 29 game winning streak, etc. I'll take the end result.

Agree. It was worth it. In fact, it is not possible for me to wish any change in our history with the Chickens because most alternative present states couldn't possible be as good and the actual present state.

In line with those was Sam Montgomery in the class of 2009. He was the #3 defensive end in the nation out of Greenwood. That team had the best defense in South Carolina in 2007 and 2008 and he was the big star (though they had some other great players like Josh Norman, DJ Swearinger, and Kelcy Quarles - Clemson whiffed on all of them). 6'4", 260 pounds, ran like an 11 second 100 meter dash, and was so powerful. He was also smart and seemed to really like the Tigers. I really wanted him to come to Clemson.
But Bowden and Dabo didn't pursue him very hard at all. Meanwhile, Spurrier, Saban, and Miles went hardcore after him. He ended up a unanimous first-team All-American for LSU. In 2010, our defensive line would have been Da'Quan Bowers, Jarvis Jenkins, Brandon Thompson, and Sam Montgomery and would have greatly improved our mediocre defensive line in 2011.

We dropped off Parnell Burnside because we were told he wasn’t going going to qualify academically. Actually, he was a National Merit Scholar with a 1480 on his SATs. Someone lied to us.

Tommy Bowden pulled the plug and dabo recruiting Tim Tebow because of Willy korn. Dabo said he wanted to keep recruiting Tim and tim was interested but he wasn’t the head coach.

I have never been as frustrated with Clemson football as I was with Tommy Bowden after that 2008 Weak Florist debacle.
During my time at Clemson, we were bad, but it was easy to see that we just didn't match up talentwise with MANY of our opponents. Bowden brought in talent, but couldn't coach it worth a lick.

^Can't say that enough.
I never thought he could keep the kids focused. You could almost tell in the first 10 minutes of every game if it was going to be loss. He (and his staff) struggled to make any adjustments if we were flat.
The 2011 or so Maryland game where we were down 18 points on the road was the culture changer.

Sorry, but I ain't buying that. Tibow was a gator from the day of his birth. Parents were big gator fans. He lived in St. Augustine, just south of Jaxsonville. He was so much in the pocket of UF that Bobby Bowden didn't even try to recruit him.
Clemson may have been recruiting him, but no way was he going anywhere except UF.

Props to Pat Dye for being honest, there certainly were/are many coaches that would have lied about it just to get him to commit. So sad his career ended on such a fluke injury. For you youngsters he was an amazing runner and a MLB All-star.

Some would argue Dion. The best athlete ever who excelled at every sport he played was Jim Brown, like you, this is my opinion.

He was a lock for LSU, except for the fact that LSU was slow playing him.
We snuck in at the final hour and ended up with the best back in the history of the ACC.

My favorite part of that story was that we got on him because an Alabama assistant told us we might want to have a look at him. They knew he could be a good player and wanted to avoid having to play against him every year. Well, how did that work out? They have already played against him twice with another chance this year.

I heard it was an assistant coach that put Clemson on Etienne. They didn't want A & M to have him in the SEC West. Could have been Nikita Satan though.

Their refusal to make a solid commitment to him turned him into the greatest running back in ACC history. Not many recruiting gaffes deal with players of his history book rewriting caliber.

from Columbia to Clemson buck nekkid if QB Tommie Frazier didn't commit to Clemson. That's how big a "lock" it was. This was on his old SportsTalk radio show in the early 90's... I think his sidekick on that show was Teddy Heffner? Not positive. Anyway. Frazier was from Florida... no way, NO WAY he would go to Nebraska. But of course he did... and led those freaking awesome, dominant Nebraska teams that won multiple nat'l titles and are always in the discussion of the best college team in history.

There was some recruit we offered a few years ago that was a high school QB that we recruited as an athlete and told him he would have to earn a spot and playing time when he got on campus.
Muscoot told him he could play QB at cooterville college and he would be the best thing since Suggs and Ellis. I don't know whatever became of him, but I assume he's currently working his way into a radio broadcasting position.
