What’s with the complaining about students yesterday?

Sep 20, 2020, 10:12 AM

Were a lot of student tickets not used?

Were students not loud enough?

I realize it’s trendy on TigerNet to characterize students today as being less devoted to football than the “good old days” when you were a student and never missed a second of any game and yelled and cheered even when you went to take a leak. But it’s ridiculous to see all the whining after pretty much every game about students not living up to your standards.

I have some news for you: most students don’t go to college for the football. They go because they want an education. Those who are passionate about football are generally very involved and loud. Please show them some grace, especially since we are in the middle of a pandemic and they are in the process of returning to in-person classes.

Oh, and we also piped in noise yesterday and won by 49 points. I don’t think the team suffered because there weren’t enough “hard core” students there.

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all.

Under usual circumstances, student support has a lot to do with creating a home field advantage. I don’t think that was a factor in yesterday’s game though, with only 19,000 fans, piped in noise, and a 49 point win.

Lack of student support had little to do with team success yesterday.

That only applies to men’s basketball.

The upper deck where they were supposed to be seated looked pretty bare from the shots of the stadium on TV (especially the side above the lower student section)

You make the call. Does seem to me the system should exist to allow students that want to attend to fill up the 2300(?) seats up there. I mean we do have a 20,000-ish student body now, right?

With the limit on the number of fans allowed, the IPTAY money drove the students out of their normal sections and into the upper deck. Be glad for the students that came to the Citadel game (not really a game). Remember the University could have made the same decision as ND to only allow students, faculty/staff and player parents in the stands.

It appeared that tickets for half of the student section were not issued. Does anyone have information on what happened? Was there a glitch in the online signup process or lack of interest from the students?

Well I can tell you my daughter and my lifelong best friend's son...yep they're both freshmen in the bridge program...bought tickets off stubhub. Not going to a game in Death Valley was NOT even an option! I don't know how the ticketing allotment/turnout actually was, but I hope if there were any leftover or unused tix the athletic dept figures something out goin forward.

I only went to 5 games while at Clemson. I hate crowds. I watch every game that is televised. You couldn't pay me to go to a game.

Yesterday’s game had a predetermined outcome.

Sep 20, 2020, 11:23 AM

The opponent was simply undermanned and had less overall talent. The entertainment value was lower because the competitiveness was lacking. Candidly can’t blame fans for being less enthusiastic than normal.

You're correct but when considering there's only a few games left to see a couple future HOF'ers, you'd think any game would be a must see if it's feasible to be there. Especially in the same year that a National C'ship is a possibility. Oppurtunities like these don't grow on trees.

El Cid seemed pretty competitive in the second half. Held off our top rated freshmen. I give them kudos for that.

Judge, I agree to an extent. Kids today have many more options

Sep 20, 2020, 11:50 AM

About how to spend their free time.

This issue will not be going away (once pandemic is over).

1. We should carefully consider before doing anymore expansion to the stadium.

2. I don’t think students should be placed in the upper deck under any circumstances. They need to be down low, where they can influence the game.

3. We still had a number of procedural penalties called against the Citadel yesterday, even with reduced capacity.

Don’t blow your first two points by making a ridiculous 3rd point. In no way was the crowd a factor in the game - let alone causing an offsides.

Re: Judge, I agree to an extent. Kids today have many more options

Sep 20, 2020, 9:54 PM [ in reply to Judge, I agree to an extent. Kids today have many more options ]

I take issue with your 2nd item. Here are my reasons:

1. I have been a member of IPTAY since 1976. I've increased my contribution a few times and get 8
seats in the South lower bowl. My 8 tickets have been reduced to 2 in the North lower bowl. I've
had these 8 tickets for 30 plus years.

2. I'm one of the loudest fans in my section. I get in my seats 15/20 minutes before kickoff and stay
until the end of our Alma Mater.

3. If you can do the maff, you'll know that I'm pretty old.

With your best logic please present your argument of why I should give 2 students my lower bowl seats for 2 upper deck seats. I imagine there are statistics for this, but I have no idea how many students will join IPTAY, buy season tickets, or even return for individual games. Talking with some of my fellow alumni I'm confident most of the lower bowl ticket holders are in situations similar to mine.

If you can't come up the logic to support your argument, a simple you're right, you win is acceptable.

Based on your age you sat in the lowers as a student. I know there were no uppers then, but you did sit in the lowers and had better lowers than the students have today.

Clemson is a school and not the Panthers. The environment is set by the students. This is why many of love college over pro.

I am sure if a game goes into OT no one is concerned about where you are sitting in determining which side of the field they are playing on.

I did have good tickets. Freshmen sat in Sec A, Soph in Sec B, Jr in Sec C, and in Sec D and part of E.

Let's do a little math about your 2nd paragraph. I'm guessing students get 18,000 or so tickets. With the opposing team getting 5,000/7,000 that leaves 55,000 tickets for what is mostly alumni and IPTAY members. If you truly think the students set the environment with one third as many fans in the stands you need to go back to school and take some course that that covers acoustics. It may also help you to come down to the West Zone and listen for yourself.

If a game goes into OT I could probably sit anywhere I want. Particularly if it's a night game and the Tigers were ever behind.

As I said in my other post a simple you're right, you win is acceptable.
