Line Play - Win in the Trenches?

Dec 3, 2015, 9:42 AM

I admittingly haven't watched much tar hole football this year. Anybody have a realistic read on how our lines match up?

Our O-line should be able to lead us to big rushing yardage

and help us control the ball, then when they start putting ten on line, DW4 could take over game with his passing. 45 -18

According to everyone they are stronger at every position.

Apparently we have to play perfectly to win while they only have to bring their "B" game. In reality, BOTH our lines are superior and it will show Saturday. The best Dline they faced all year was probably VT or the coots.

Here are a few numbers about their defense

Dec 3, 2015, 10:54 AM

These stats are from the NCAA's website, and I think it paints a picture that looks beyond their record when you consider their opponents this season.

3rd down defense
North Carolina 91st allowing 42.3% conversions
Clemson: 1st allowing 24% conversions

Rush Defense
North Carolina: 105th -- 208.3 yards per game -- 18 TDs -- 4.67 yards per rush
Clemson: 24th -- 127.7 yards per game -- 12 TDs -- 3.65 yards per rush

Sacks
North Carolina: 74th -- 23 sacks
Clemson: 10th -- 36 sacks

Sacks Allowed
North Carolina: 7th -- 12 sacks
Clemson: 15th -- 14 sacks

Rushing Offense
North Carolina: 18th -- 229 yards per game -- 36 Touchdowns -- 6.0 yards per rush
Clemson: 25th -- 214 yards per game -- 27 Touchdowns -- 4.87 yards per rush

Tackles for loss allowed
North Carolina: 6th -- 4.25 TFL allowed per game
Clemson: 18th -- 4.75 TFL allowed per game

Turnovers forced
North Carolina: 24 (9 fumbles, 15 INT) -- +9 TO margin
Clemson: 21 (8 fumbles, 13 INT) -- -3 TO margin (this is the Tigers' bugaboo lately)

Turnover margin is an interesting statistic. Against their toughest competition (in my view, at least), Clemson has been pretty solid.

Against Notre Dame, FSU, NC State, and Miami the Tigers are +7 in TOs. Against NC State, they were even in the battle, all others at least +2

For North Carolina, the story is kinda similar, but their competition not as tough as Clemson. Against NC State, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Pitt they are just +2. They lost TO battle against NC State 3:1.

If Clemson comes out Saturday night and protects the football, which they have shown to do against their best competition, I don't think the game will be as close as the guys on tv are trying to sell it to be.
