ACC Championship game/CFP tweak

Nov 28, 2018, 9:04 AM

Why not, if one (or more) division champ has at least two losses and is ranked lower than Notre Dame, make the higher ranked division champ the ACC champion and have them play Notre Dame? This would give ND the all important 13th data point in years they were a factor, would make the championship week game more of a marquee matchup, and would potentially help a one loss ACC champ still qualify for the playoffs? You potentially could do the same thing with, say, the Pac 12 and the highest ranked Group of 5 team, giving the group of 5 team the option of playing the PAC champ instead of playing in its own conference championship game.

Why not just make Notre Dame join a conference, and end it right there.

That would be ideal but that ship has sailed for now

And did you read down to the part about giving a Group of 5 team in the playoff race a similar opportunity to play a Power 5 conference champ instead of playing in its own conference championship?

Curious to hear your thoughts on that.

so you want to make more special rules to help ND

fork that.

pitt isn't undefeated but they are in a conference and have earned the right to play for a conference championship.

I think a better idea would be to give a team that is already in the playoff the right to decline playing that 13th game. call it the ND clause.

This helps ND how?

They are in the playoff and sitting on the couch this week. This would have them playing the #2 team in the country on the road.

Last thing I want to do is help ND...but I would like to explore ways to improve the postseason. Just an idea for discussion.

True, but that's not much different from UGA (4) and Bama (1) playing for the SEC Championship.

This all just points out the conference championships don't matter... at least, not in the SEC... because BAMA is in regardless.

Probably because they can't***

While Clemson/Notre Dame could certainly be a better game, it would likely knock one or the other out of the playoffs and cost them (and the conference) millions. There's very little upside for a lot of risk.

And there is no risk playing 7-5 Pitt?

Nov 28, 2018, 9:20 AM

We lose and we are out anyway, and you have an 8-5 ACC champ. How is that a win for the conference?

Re: And there is no risk playing 7-5 Pitt?

Nov 28, 2018, 9:39 AM

There's not nearly as much risk playing 7-5 Pitt in what will likely look like a home game as there is playing 12-0 Notre Dame with a fan base that will buy as many tickets as we will. We wouldn't be a 24 point favorite in that game. There's no upside for either team in what you proposed, at least not this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree no upside for either this year

Nov 28, 2018, 11:40 AM

But how often do we have an undefeated ACC champ and an undefeated ND? Would be great if we could make it a home game for the ACC champ, but contractual obligations prevent that.

Say, for instance, we had lost the Syracuse game. We would be on the outside looking in, and this game could be our ticket to the CFP.
