Unless you are the highest seed in your pool, it's effectively a single elimination tournament (you may still play a game, but you can't win your pool).

The only team that can advance from any pool with a loss is the highest seeded team.

I don't much like the quirk of playing games that don't matter, but I do like the known quantity of games this provides. It's easier to set up your rotation and not burn pitchers, and gives a strategic advantage to regular season records.

So if NC State beats FSU which would put all teams in that pool at 1-1, NC State would advance just because they are the higher seed?

There are only 2 possible outcomes with 3 team pool play.

1) All three teams at 1-1
or
2) One team at 2-0, one team at 1-1, and the last at 0-2

The tiebreaker for scenario 1 is seeding.
