SPECIAL TEAMS: I heard Mickey Plyler defending our special

Jan 19, 2016, 11:02 PM

teams on the radio the other day. He was saying we aren't that bad. Insinuating our special teams weren't a negative.

Is he nuts?

Our special teams are HORRIBLE. As a whole, we have some of the worst special teams in the country. That's not only looking at the "elite" teams, its looking at all 128 teams in 1-A.

We are bad on special teams. Really, really bad. It's a wonder we've done as well as we have, in spite of our terrible special teams. And when I say terrible, I mean terrible.

Yea, we gave up some big pass plays against Alabama. Our safeties got caught looking in the backfield 3 or 4 times and it hurts us, but I'm here to tell you our special teams cost is the national championship. Maybe that's already obvious to some, but then there are others, like Mickey Plyler, who apparently have their head in the sand. Our special teams need new coaches or new techniques.

It's just that simple. I've heard Danny Pearman is the Special Teams Coach and I've heard we coach special teams by committee. Whichever way it is, we need to fix it immediately. Like, before spring practice immediately.

What are you waiting on Dabo Swinney? Please, sir, tell me your head isn't also in the sand??

Greg Huegal aside, the whole thing needs to be gutted and replaced. We were 15th in FG %, otherwise, special teams suck. They suck really, really bad.

We were the #1 team in every playoff poll leading up to the national championship, in spite of horrid special teams. Ever heard the old saying you need to win 2 of 3 between offense, defense, and special teams to win a game? Well darn good thing we had an awesome offense and defense, because without them both we'd be fortunate to be in the top 25 let alone play for the national title.

I think we were better than Alabama. I think we should have won the game. We had more yards against them than anyone in 40 games. Not since Johnnie Manziel and Texas A&M did anyone have as many yards against them as we did. Almost 3 complete seasons. Hats off to the offense. We obviously did well enough on offense to win the national championship.

Our defense gave up 473 yards against Alabama, but most of it was on one long run and 4 chunk pas plays. Safeties needs to do better. Much better than what they did against Alabama. Odd how the two main safeties are off the NFL, but in any case, obviously our defense is one of the main reasons we've been so good and the #1 team for most of this season. The big plays hurt, but I still think we were good enough between offense and defense to win the game.

Special Teams? Not so much. I believe they were the reason we lost the national championship. And much like Dabo changed the defense after getting killed against WVA, its time to change the special teams. Now.

Our kickoff coverage is absolutely horrible. We were 116th in the country! Nowhere near good enough to be an elite team winning national championships. We were one of only two teams in the entire country to give up 3 TD's on kickoffs, and oh yeah, one of those was in the national championship game. What the crap is wrong with our kickoff coverage team? And don't give me the jimmy/joe junk that Mickey was spewing, because it just isn't truth. We have plenty of good athletes on our team capable of playing kickoff coverage. Don't tell me it was because we didn't consistently get touchbacks. You should be able to kick it in the corner at the 3 yard kine and cover it. Most everyone else can do it, why not us? It's because we don't know how to coach it, that's why. Why in sam hill were we 116th?? Why did we give up more TDs than 126 other teams in the country?

On punt coverage, we were 34th. Not too bad, but shouldn't the #1 team in the country be higher ranked than that? I don't know, but....

Punt returns? Gimme a break. What punt returns?? Again, we have some of the best athletes in the country, yet we can't do better than 123rd in punt returns? That's right, 123rd. Only Louisiana-Monroe, Old Dominion, Kansas, Idaho, and Connecticut were worse than us. Did I mention we were the #1 team since the very first playoff poll? Yet we were in the last 6 teams in the country in punt returns? Why is that? Because we are not coached well in this segment, that's why. Our defense was awesome again this year. We were in the to 25 in forcing punts, yet 123rd in returns. This has got to change.

Sorry Mickey, but you sir are dead wrong. Our special teams are, as a whole, atrocious. As one of the elite teams in the country, we need to repair them right away. We lost the national championship because of a horrible fundamental error that we've been doing all year and Nick Saban saw it, and we gave up a 100 yard TD while finishing 116th in kickoff coverage.

When is Dabo scheduled to speak to the public again? I sure hope he mentions something about making changes that will help us win the national title in 2016.

blooded Clemson man who has stuck with Dabo since day 1. Obviously he's turned out to be one of the best coaches in America and will hopefully be around for a long time and continue to add to his legacy. However, special teams are the reason we didn't win the national championship this season and I'm afraid they'll cost another huge game somewhere down the line if we don't fix it right away. That's not the opposite of sunshine pumping. That's just telling the truth. No need to draw the pumper/dumper line in the sand, it is what is is and it sucks.

Specials teams aren't the only reason we lost what about the coverage bust over and over on D

Re: For what it's worth, I'm an overly optimistic orange-

Jan 20, 2016, 12:45 AM

Yes and what about the missed calls, DW's INT and the stalled drives???

You can make excuses, but look at this logically... any one play and we couldve changed the outcome.

There were 17 points lost by special teams:
1 missed FG
1 Onside kick that led to a TD (You can blame this on D I know)
1 Kick return

17 POINTS!!!!

We lost by 5... Special teams IS the issue.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course. I mentioned that.

Jan 20, 2016, 7:36 AM [ in reply to Re: For what it's worth, I'm an overly optimistic orange- ]

Spelled that out quite clearly. The busted overages hurt and were a factor, but special teams were clearly the main reason we lost the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure anyone has their head in the sand...

Jan 20, 2016, 8:19 AM [ in reply to For what it's worth, I'm an overly optimistic orange- ]

...that said, you haven't really offered anything.

We need to improve on special teams...our team and program are top 5 in the country right now...yet we have something to work on.

It's not like we were under .500, lost to our rival at home (for 2 straight in series, lost to the Citadel, had a coach quit half way through a season and just hired a re-tread who couldn't win at Florida.

That's trouble...special teams being addressed is a pretty minor thing.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

And, the entire Clemson Football Team overall should be pisssed tOO!

If you recall before that game, the most common talking point was that they were going to physically beat the snooze out of us. such as kickoff coverage and punt returns. And even if it did, wouldn't that also fall under lack of good special teams coaching in that there weren't adequate, coached-up players at those positions at an elite program?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. The natty wasn't an exception. It was the norm.

Jan 20, 2016, 8:11 AM

Minus someone abusing our lack of fundamentals (watching the ball until kicked and stay in your zone/lane) on the onside kickoff, we've seen the lack of punt returns and poor kickoff coverage for years. Completely unacceptable for a program on our level. This wasn't a jimmy/joe thing or an anomaly by any stretch of the imagination.

least an entire segment pointing toward FGs and punt coverage, and defending the special teams as a whole. I listened closely and intent1y. 'Defending' is the clear point here, and I don't know how myself or anyone could have missed the point. Replacing specialists is a lame reason, bubba. This wasn't the first year we've sucked in those areas, and we have as much talent or more than anyone available to play on those teams, this year included. Kickoff coverage and punt returns especially have long been a weight to our program. Maybe you didn't express yourself as well as you think you did? It happens, perhaps more than you realize.I like your show, but that discussion was off.

Jan 20, 2016, 9:00 AM

Clemson is loaded with talent all across the board. However, that talent is super young at the moment. Our kicking isn't what ails Clemson right now. It is Special Teams Coverage. Well we had mostly true freshmen out on kick off coverage and receiving this past season. So you can expect some busted coverage or missed blocking assignments. They will get better as time progresses. Coach Swinney was a little thin at players he could find to fill the roles of players that either graduated or left for the NFL last season. I think the team will be more complete as a whole with the experience they have gained from last season. We will be alright.
