Last year Clemson was the only one in top 4 FPI that made it to CFP. Bama was # 6 and the Buckeyes and Huskies were 17 and 13, respectively. Message: the preseason predicts with a grain of salt. Example - LSU was # 1 !

Apparently losing big to Clemson gets you a ton of points in the FPI for the following season. See OU in 2015, OU in 2016, OSU in 2017.

What a crock of bs; how do they run simulation without knowing who is quarterback, running back, receivers, etc.. I mean the roster isnt remotely set; grain of salt is an understatement. This kind of crap is why espn is becoming more and more of a dumpster fire and no one gets news from them anymore; its completely fabricated.

like returning production and such to estimate. It's a preseason prediction so it's obviously only going to be so accurate.

South Carolina is ranked #32 based on this "poll" ahead of the likes of UNC, Ole Miss, Mississippi State (not saying a lot but trying to make a point), and Arkansas. They are also only one spot behind Va. Tech. Sorry, but I don't put a whole lot of stock in this "metric" right here.

Here are our opponents and their FPI this year for anyone curious:
Kent St: 116 Auburn: 5 Louisville: 14 Boston College: 72 Virginia Tech: 32 Wake Forest: 54 Syracuse: 46 Georgia Tech: 37 NC State: 22 Florida State: 4 Citadel: N/A South Carolina: 32
That means with the 11 teams we play in the FBS, our opponent has an average FPI of 39.36. I obviously don't have the stats on every other team, but that seems like a pretty tough S.O.S.
Then again, does this metric actually mean anything?

It means we should schedule more SEC teams

as they clearly have a bump in FPI.
Also the FPI is complete garbage as they have had Oklahoma and other teams ranked above us at year-end even after we obliterated them.

advanced metric i looked at. They weight every game equally whereas humans obviously place a far larger emphasis on some games than others. We were the best team in the playoff but had several bumps in the road during the regular season while Bama was consistently great throughout the entire year.
There's really nothing wrong with that, you just have to take it for what it is.

Is this "FPI" the one that had Bama #1 AFTER we beat them?***

Yes. So I would interpret this as meaning, if Clemson payed Alabama 100 times on January 9, 2017 - then Alabama would win at least 51 times. Everyone would be really tired too.
I can live with that.

In that scenario, I don't think Bama would win any of them. Their defense wouldn't have put up much of a fight after the first Butt Whoppin they took. By halfway through the second game they would have been carting the entire defense first and second team off the field on stretchers. Go Tigers
