A graveyard for coaches. Coot U.

Dec 26, 2014, 4:55 PM

Has there ever been a Head Coach the Coots have had, that left there and became a Head Coach at another D1 school as his next stop?

Actually

well....no. If I'm correct none of them have ever been a head coach again. Could be wrong though.

The last head coach to get a head coaching job is Sparky Woods(1989-93). He is the current head coach at VMI since 2008. Frank Dobson coached at USuCk in 1918. He was previously a Clemson head coach 1910-1912 and later at Maryland from 1936-1939. Besides these two, most either saw their head coaching careers end or went down to Newberry or other small colleges

Curiosity had me check this out in the past...

Dec 26, 2014, 6:46 PM

There were 31 usc coaches prior to Spurrier. Of the 31 here is a breakdown of what they did after usc:

NO FORMER HEAD COACH went straight to a Division 1 school as a head coach.

Only 3 coaches held a head coach position at Division 1 schools, but only after coaching lower division schools or time off from coaching. (All 3 coaches were at usc prior to 1920)

7 coaches held a head coach position at lower division schools.

1 coach went on to coach one year as a head coach in the Canadian Football League (Marvin Bass, '61 - '65 at usc, coached Montreal Beavers in 1966)

20 coaches never had a head coaching job again.

I bet there isn't another D-1 school in the country....

Dec 26, 2014, 7:10 PM

with that bad a record of former coaches failing to land another D-1 HC job. If fact, it would be almost impossible to do worse. I knew it was bas, because I can remember all the way back to Bass, and couldn't anyone getting a D-1 job.
