Who has tips on making rip cuts with a circular saw?

Jun 17, 2020, 10:20 AM

I attempted this yesterday. The board is only 8x6 and I need to take .75 inches off. I attempted this yesterday but holding a straight line didn't really work and the combination of workspace and clamps I have didn't really work for clamping the speedsquare to use as a guide.

buy a table saw

That is in the works but not quite ready for that.

Jun 17, 2020, 10:33 AM

I guess I could try and find one second hand, but not knowing how it was treated would make me nervous.

sad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hold the board real close to where you're actually cutting

Jun 17, 2020, 10:28 AM

Like put your finger on the line so you make sure the saw doesn't go over that line.

Jun 17, 2020, 10:38 AM [ in reply to Take it to Home Depot and tip the guy in the plywood aisle. ]

If so good luck. Wrong tool. Chop saw would be better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those are roughly the dimensions.

Jun 17, 2020, 10:42 AM

I do have a chop saw but aren't rip cuts a bit no no on those?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’d hardly call 8” a rip cut. What’s the application?***

Jun 17, 2020, 10:48 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First, any cut with the grain is a rip.

Jun 17, 2020, 11:42 AM

Second, this is going to be for a pretty simple bird house. I made a mistake somewhere along the line and measure for some pieces to sit on to top of the bottom piece and others to sit flush with it. Now may goal is to fix it with as little wood as possible so this doesn't turn into a $70 thing.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You’d get away with it here. The birds aren’t sticklers

8x6 is a weird board size. Or did you mean 2x6x8?

Jun 17, 2020, 11:06 AM

I have one of these, it works OK on sheet goods, haven't tried it on a board.

I love these, which ended up mysteriously missing after a move. Need to get more.

Just a couple thoughts. You could also use a piece lumber if it has a good, straight edge (I've used a finish 1-by piece of lumber for an "ok" edge). Just be aware, factory lumber is rarely straight enough to get a good cut.

I like the clamp edge saw guides better, they can be used on pretty much anything and the width of the cut doesn't matter down to really narrow working material (need to have enough to clamp the fence and allow for the offset of the saw guard to the blade).

The circular saw rip fence is good, but is marked only for cuts up to 24" width (half-sheet). It has a couple inches capacity to be wider than that, but not much. And, what I found is, extended out at those wider cuts it gets a little unwieldy and drags the edge wanting to lag behind the saw. Cross-cutting a 4x8x23/32 sheet at 28 inches wasn't manageable with that fence (I used a piece of lumber as a rough cut fence then cleaned the edge on my table saw.

Ultimately I think I'm just going to build an extension to my table saw. Or maybe a cross-cut sled for working with sheet goods.

One other note - the long clamp edge guides are expensive

Jun 17, 2020, 12:53 PM

Just like anything else long. You pay by the inch ;)

Get two saw horses and 2 by 6 long enough to hold your board

Place board on said 2 by 6, make mark where you need to cut

Place another board on top of the board to be cut

Make sure marks are far enough away from bottom 2 by 6

Clamp all three boards together. Make sure to add on adjustment for offset of saw

Re measure and saw with circular saw using top board as your straight line

I’ve got one rigged up in the garage right now
