Concrete Quote
Dec 4, 2019, 12:26 PM
|
|
|
Gents, I'm extending the concrete around my pool by 6" half way around, adding a 12x18 patio, and pouring a sidewalk at the estate. I attached a rough sketch of the work.
The guy is quoting some dirt work because of my red clay, forming, pouring, and doing a salt-rock finish.
I estimate the square footage to be 650sq ft. So on a 4" slab, I would guess maybe 8 yards.
What would you expect the price to be?

I got quotes from 135 to $200 cy when I did my driveway in 2013. But I did a lot more than 8 CY.
I assume concrete is still around $100/CY and labor is what ranges ($35-$70) + the skid steer.

Quikrete is 0.6 CF and costs $4.89. You would need (8CY*27CF/CY)/0.6CF = 360 80 lb bags of quikrete. At $4.89 a bag that is $1760. Add in tax. Add in costs for rental of a mixer, form boards, trowels (if you don't already have them) you're looking at about $2200 (+/- $100). You could save close to $100 with the 5% lowes discount.

$3685 + maybe $800-900 to bring in and spread around about 10 tons of dirt. He graciously gave me the option of bringing in my own dirt...
About half of it would be poured against existing pool slab, house foundation, or shed foundation. The the sidewalk portion, and outer sides of the patio and pool extension would need to be formed. Some of those forms would be curved... probably wouldn't be too difficult, though...
Sounds like I need to get a second quote.

Let me tell you a story.
Dec 4, 2019, 2:03 PM
|
|
I bought my house from my grandparents about 5 years ago.
The pool was put in in 1983. A beautiful concrete patio was installed a year or two later.
In the early 2000's, GrandmamAdidas had GrandaddyAdidas paint the whole concrete patio, pavers, etc. with red paint so it would look like brick.
That paint is some sort of magic paint that cant be removed short of grinding the whole thing down.
It looks horrible.
SarahAdidas wants it gone. I want it gone.
It has to go.

So it was the painting of the pavers that is the issue?
Dec 4, 2019, 2:13 PM
|
|
I ask because I day dream of making a path out to my shed. It won't be terribly long depending if I put some stairs on the back end of my patio or just use what I've got. I also consider running a path from front door to a flower bed since the current landing goes to nothing.
If this set-up can't be made to look good, I need to dream another dream.

I had a good feeling about these folks, they seemed less sketchy, I guess.
Their quote was $6250!
Most of the folks I've asked at work guessed the job would be around $3000-$4000... which is inline with the first quote.
Are you guys that are estimating low just messing with me, or am I about to get gypped?

Your best bet is to probably form it all yourself. bring in your own fill if you need too and compact it down. Order the concrete yourself Then find a couple mexicans on craigslist to come in and do the finish work.
In all reality finishing concrete on a patio isn't that hard. you could just get a construction joint tool and a few trowels. For sidewalks the surface is just brushed with a push broom.

Maybe I'll call "Tee", or my brother's guy, "Stepp", and see what they would charge to come pour and smooth 9yds of concrete if I do the dirt work and the form work myself. I'm guessing it would be less than $2000.
I can form that job and do the dirt work on a weekend. I have an excavator, tractor, a surplus of scrap wood and whatnot. If ANYBODY was every going to take this job on and be successful, I'd be the guy. (not to toot my own horn) (or tiggity my own weiner)

So the $3685 quote guy says its 9 yards on the dot, more than my original estimate of 8. He is pumping in the concrete also. He says that they could use a truck, but given the layout of my yard, a pumper would be "better". He says that the drivers are retards and will make a mess, but my gut tells me the pumper is easier for him... He's also going to cut a 15' trench in an existing slab on the property so that I can lay some electrical wires in it. That was sort of a "throw in" item.
Probably 230' of forms needed and 100' of expansion joint material.
He's also going to do a salt rock finish.
What say you, Greenr, A912®? Does that quote sound a bit more "in-line" with the additional information.

Considering pump truck rentals are $800-1000, now it is really sketchy. Make sure he isn't charging you for that. If he isn't then that's a good deal I suppose. Make sure you got somewhere for them to wash out.
If he is gonna charge you extra then consider renting a Georgia buggy

My local place is $145 for a 1 day rental. You can get it on either skid steers or tires. If I were ryanadidas i'd get them to do the buggy. A pump truck is overkill for only 9 CY unless it is physically impossible to get a buggy to the pour site. Usually only see the pump trucks on large pours.
