What's going on with this guy? I never hear or see anything about him. Is he injured? Does he ever play or did I miss something??

Yes, he redshirted last year, because they said that unlike Tre Lamar, he just wasn't ready. He should at least be 3 rd team by now, unless he is a total bust.

Shaq Smith explanation
Questions were raised when redshirt freshman linebacker Shaq Smith did not appear on Clemson’s season-opening depth chart, but Tuesday Venables provided some clarity.
According to Venables, Smith missed two weeks of Clemson’s 3½-week fall camp with a high ankle sprain. Coaches liked where Smith was in his development ahead of the injury, but the Tigers need to see how he plays upon his return to deem where he is on the depth chart moving forward. Clemson is hopeful he will play Saturday.
“He was doing very well, but you’ve got to earn your way back unless you’ve already solidified yourself as a bonafide starter dude,” Venables said. “If Kendall Joseph misses four days of practice and he gets back healthy, he’s earned his position. Now if he comes back and he’s terrible, then you’ll reevaluate that. But Shaq’s coming.”
