Better front at stopping triple option

Sep 21, 2016, 3:30 PM

3-4 or 4-3?

I like the 4-3 to help take the dive and up the middle stuff and let my LBs cheat outside. Even better I like the 4-4

I agree, with a 4-3 you allow the O-line to get to your second level, linebackers, which plays right into that offense as they look to gain short yardage on every down.

It's not the fronts it's the guys in the uniforms.

...We have seen a few teams try some goofy stuff that didn't work but the quality of the players on the defense is what makes the difference. I've seen 3-4 give us fits, I've seen 4-3. The common denominator is talent. If you have two stud DTs, then you certainly want to take advantage of them and run a 4-3. The two things that kill us are the studs inside, and LBs that can beat blocks and really run.

VT kicked our butt in 2013 when they put a CB at LB. He was too quick to block and he made plays all over the field. Miami used to move Sean Spence from OLB to the Mike and he would just run sideline to sideline all day long.

It's all about stud defenders that can beat blocks, you guys have a ton. Doesn't matter too much how you line them up.

The 4-4 makes the blocking angles better for GT

Sep 21, 2016, 4:31 PM [ in reply to Re: Better front at stopping triple option ]

...We have put up some huge plays against 4-4 fronts. It makes the blocking angles easier for WRs and A-Backs. Now, like I said before if teams have 8 studs and defeat blocks, you can line up however you want and they're probably going to kill us. If you don't, GT will give 4-4 a lot of problems. I remember the first year we played UGA, they played lots of 4-4. We had huge run after huge run that day.

4-3. For the triple option the best D to run IMO is 4-4. But you have to have 2 dependable corners and a safety that doesn't get sucked in.

We pretty much played a 4-4 front last year using Kearse as a 4th LB against them.

If we are talking 4* type players in each formation (players matter more than scheme) I would go with the 4-3 because you can set the edge and shut down the run while leaving your LBs free to react.

The 3-4 is great if you have a strong NG to fill the middle but without an exceptional talent you are forced to bring in both MLBs to support.

how good is your corner and safety play?

Sep 21, 2016, 3:52 PM

I like getting those guys involved...

play your corners at 3 yards, and safeties and 6-8... safeties need to be screaming downhill when they get run..

fit corners outside, for anything wide

you may give up a couple of big pass plays... but if you trust your guys in man, you're good

if you have a monster like lawrence at the nose and SDE that can stretch out the pitch play, then the 3-4. Seems like it is harder to cut someone that does not line up with their hand on the ground.
