2016 Special Teams ALL IN Overhaul

Jan 17, 2016, 11:15 PM

Even Capt Obvious could tell you Tiger kick & punt returns and kick & punt coverage was not average in 2015. It was terrible. 126 out of 129 performance before championship game meltdown. Even with our phenomenal talent level, a talent level equal to the Alabama Crimson Tide, the coaches were not "ALL IN" on Special Teams. According to our players, off the record, our coaches played it safe and not to fail.

Almost every game and special teams' play provided an example. Even before the FSU and ALA games, and their KO returns to the left, it was clear the contain man was never in place. It was easy pickings for opponents on most kickoffs. We fair catch most every punt return. Tip of the iceberg.

And Deshaun was there to pick up the slack. And it worked until the ALA game. The question is what will Clemson do in 2016 to go ALL IN? Will Dabo and our coaches go ALL IN on Special Teams like the team does on Offense and Defense and play to win and not play ultra-conservatively to not to make mistakes?

2015. What a great year. Dabo, coaches, players and the ultimate player Deshaun deserve so much credit. They gave Clemson one of our best two seasons of all time. And it was all accomplished with very few positive outcomes on Special Teams. Getting better will be challenging but possible with Deshaun, Mike Williams, Leggett and our line returning on Offense and Christian, BV and our recruits on Defense.

However, getting better on Special Teams in 2016 could potentially happen by doing nothing ... the Clemson player talent is not in question. Clemson Special Teams coaching needs to step up. Clemson can improve significantly with Special Teams coaching GUTS and a responsible "buck stops here" special teams coach and an ALL IN effort. I am looking forward to how we take advantage of our talent on Special Teams in 2016 - the area of team play that even Capt. Obvious knows could give our Clemson team another dimension in 2016. As always, Go Tigers!

Did you guys read the post about Saban making the decision to use his first stringers for special teams because they were such a mess? Maybe thats what we need.

Is that your ST set up? Back ups? Does dabo have a dedicated ST crew? I've got to imagine after this years ST ranking there week be an apparent overhaul.

To be really good on special teams, you have to recruit kicking and punting specialists and dedicate a good amount of time during practice on set pieces and coverage scenarios...

It's not particularly sexy or exciting, but it's necessary. If CDS thinks that there doesn't need to be a coaching change, then there needs to be a reallocation of resources and practice time to focus on improvement. Also, go out and get a punter who can flip the field.

Agree 100%. When you have the athletes that we have special teams should not be a problem.

Special Teams: WE TOO DEEP!

Jan 18, 2016, 8:53 AM

Beyond coaching, the rule should be: If you ain't on the 2-deep, you ain't on the ST squad.

We can't afford putting the Judah Davis' out there just to take up space. We got away with this stuff against the Wake Forest's of the world, but Alabama? NO!

2015 ST is not an abberation

Jan 18, 2016, 8:52 AM

We have not been good at ST's in a long time. Our Kick coverage has been bad for so many years, I can't remember when I felt good about it. The Kick off return game hasn't been good since CJ was here.

With this coaching staff, I think we need to find a kicker who kicks it out of the endzone 99.9% of the time and move on. I've given up on Kick returns but our offense is so good, it doesn't keep me up at nights.

Interesting stat during the Under Armour AA game.
No. of UA AAs on CFP teams

Oklahoma 2
Mich St 4

Clemson 9

Alabama 43

Our 9 beat their 22 on offense and defense but
The other 21 plus some starters beat us on special teams.
Although I don't think our problem was all talent. Our late 70s & 80s teams had some players that really pu out on special teams. Steve Godfrey was one!

Good insight

Jan 18, 2016, 9:35 AM

I am not sure if it is players or scheme or lack of execution (not emphasized or practiced enough) but clearly we need to improve in this area.

The coaches have done a tremendous job overall but this is a part of the program that we have struggled with consistently. Frankly, if we could just kick the ball out of the endzone, I would be fine. While I would prefer to be great in every aspect of the game, if we just eliminate it from being a liability, that would enhance our chances, especially in those dogfight games a few times a year. Bama probably doesn't beat us without that KO return for a TD. That's a tough pill to swallow given how rarely a KO if taken to the house.

brooks: There are 2 kickers that can kick the ball out of the end zone virtually all of the time. One is a kid from Charlotte--Providence High__but to the best of my ability to decipher the recruiting at Tigerland, we are showing llittle if any interest in him. Kid kicked 45 out of 50 KO's into the end zone. Average of over 50 yards with height on punts. What are we waiting for???
We will not win any Nat Champ without special teams being addressed and anyone who thinks we can is totally c;clueless. It is a major part of college football TODAY!
