Why aren’t we playing Scar this weekend? What’s the point of a 2nd bye?

Nov 19, 2019, 10:56 PM

It was a much better the weekend before Thanksgiving in my opinion.

How long ago was the rivalry game the weekend before Thanksgiving?

ps

2nd bye week gives players much needed rest. I'm ok with that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2007 was the first year when the 12 game schedule started.

Nov 19, 2019, 11:05 PM

It was a pretty big deal at the time, because most fans hatred it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2005 was the last year we played before Thanksgiving.***

Thanksgiving is always 4th Thursday in Nov...

...fb season starts labor day weekend and ands the last saturday of November. On years when there is 14 saturdays in that span, teams will have two open dates. I think when the season was increased to 12 games the sc game ended up being played after thanksgiving.

Your 100% correct. My point is that in years where there

Nov 19, 2019, 11:35 PM

are 14 Saturday’s between Labor Day and the end of November we should try to end the regular season the weekend before Thanksgiving. It would be better for the fans, the students and athletes.

Good point - jhoff !! Never liked the game to be played on Thanksgiving weekend ! Found that very disruptive... When that happened when I was a student, the students who lived close enough could come back to see the game - those who didn’t - missed the game ....

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

It's fun for me as my coot relatives do not want to discuss football during our Thanksgiving family gathering. The meal is always enjoyable now for me. But, I guess either way is okay. At least some of them show up now, but the herd has thinned.

Think about it...it's a conference rule that every member

time at CU from 1965-1969, our first game was about the third week of September; we played 10 games; and the Carolina game was either the Saturday before or after Thanksgiving, depending upon how the dates fell.

As both schools had relative mediocre programs, our rivalry game was the season end-all, which made it a really big deal. Now, I would defer to you younger folks' opinions on the date of play, because you'll have to live with the decision a lot longer than I will. lol.

This happens every several years, affects all teams

Nov 20, 2019, 6:54 AM

The way the college football season sets up, every 5-7 years there will be a season with 14 Saturdays in it and thus 2 bye weekends. It's a quirk of the calendar, a byproduct of starting the season before Labor Day and the mandates from most conferences that their teams play their final game on Thanksgiving weekend.

Except the Army Navy Game...

Good point

Nov 20, 2019, 5:05 PM

I wonder if they get 3 byes, then?

Update: just checked, both teams do indeed have 3 bye weekends this year. Army also has 13 games scheduled, which I think teams can only do when they schedule Hawaii IIRC. (Which they did.)

Because the coots are a bye, just look at the belk bowl....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s not a “bye”

Nov 20, 2019, 5:30 PM

It’s simply an open date on the schedule. It occurred because the season began on Labor Day weekend like usual, but Thanksgiving is a week later than usual on the calendar.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wouldn't matter. TV changed the game back to AFTER

Nov 20, 2019, 5:34 PM

Thanksgiving Day (or "thanksgiving meal" if you're kommie buffoon) and the second OPEN DATE has nothing to do with it.
