2 Deep Defense Prediction

Aug 4, 2017, 5:49 PM

DE: Ferrell, Kelly
DT: Wilkins, Huggins
DT: Lawrence, Pinckney
DE: Bryant, Yeargin

WLB: Joseph, S. Smith
MLB: Lamar, C. Smith
SAM: O'Daniel, Williams/Simmons

CB: Carter, Mullen
CB: Edmond, Fields/Wallace
FS: Smith, Simmons
SS: Muse, Johnson

I think Jalen Williams and Isaiah Simmons will both see meaningful snaps at SAM. Simmons seems perfect for that spot against pass-happy offenses. Cornerback was the toughest spot for me. Any other predictions?

Wow I must've missed that news. I knew about the neck injury but didn't know it was season ending. Jordan Williams better be ready to crack the rotation then.

Really? Seems a bit small. Guess I missed that news as well.

north of 280 and thick frame, many from his high school

In Virginia said he was more of a natural DT but the recruiting services all missed it.

Move register in place of yeargin, add skalski as an "or" with s smith. Move Wallace to "or" with Mullen they are both competing at boundary not field.

I wouldn't be shocked if Jordan Williams finds a niche as an end when we run a 3 man line Wilkins-Lawrence-Williams. A lot of times they use true freshman as niche players and he has that tweener body perfect for it as he grows into a 300 lb tackle.

I think same for Robinson. He is 275 and could be a fifth sixth DT but see time as 3 man line end.

You think Skalski splits snaps with Shaq Smith on defense?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he makes noise, guys could move around but

Aug 4, 2017, 6:19 PM

I think skalski is going to make noise while everyone is watching Lamar smith and smith.

Don't agree with a ton of that actually.

My guess...

Weakside DE: Clelin Ferrell, Xavier Kelly
3-tech DT: Christian Wilkins, Albert Huggins
1-tech DT: Dexter Lawrence, Nyles Pinckney
Strongside DE: Austin Bryant, Chris Register (to start, anyhow, by Week 3/4 it could be different)

*We could see some different combos after September at end. Ferrell and Austin are your givens. Be curious to see if Shaq Smith sees time at end and he could; we'll likely also see one of either Logan Rudolph or Justin Foster beat a redshirt and probably win that backup weakside spot, which could push Kelly back to the strong side over Register.

Weakside LB: Kendall Joseph, Jamie Skalski
Middle LB: Tre Lamar, Chad Smith
Strongside LB: Dorian O'Daniel, Jalen Williams

*Skalski's apparently a ton more instinctive than Shaq Smith, who could wind up as a weakside end with his hand on the ground. Other than that I agree with your 2-deep.

Field Corner: Mark Fields, Marcus Edmond
Boundary Corner: Trayvon Mullen, AJ Terrell
Nickel Back: Ryan Carter
Free Safety: Tanner Muse, Isaiah Simmons
Strong Safety: Van Smith, Denzel Johnson

*Keep in mind Van Smith already moved to strong safety. Muse is bigger but he also is much faster and has a ton more range; this pushes the very active Van Smith closer to the line where I think he'll be more effective. Carter played the nickel a bunch last year and I see that continuing, but I see Fields beating out Edmond at the field corner spot, he's just plain way faster.

interesting, looks just like the official 2 deep released by the coaches after the spring.

Will be hard for starters to keep Mullen on bench

Aug 4, 2017, 8:09 PM

Don't expect Mullen to be around for his senior year.
