1984 USC? Lost to Navy

Oct 24, 2012, 8:19 AM

Since I was 5 in 1984, a 4-6-1 Navy Team is the reason USC didn't win the National Championsihp in 1984???

WOW!

I see they lost to Oklahoma State in the Gator Bowl.

SC was #2 heading to Navy. If I remember correctly, the #1 team lost and sc was set to take over the top spot with a win vs Navy. They go on to beat us and they would have most likely been the mix for the NC, not necessarily playing for it.

Back then the #1 and #2 teams did not play and the NC was determined by the poll voters. BYU ended up winning the NC by defeating 6-5 Michigan in their bowl. Had they beat Navy and won their bowl game, they would have most likely split the NC with BYU (because it is doubtful they would have played each other in a bowl.)

they were a fraud that year anyway. Just like this year.***

The Tigers were in the state of Maryland that day as well

Oct 24, 2012, 9:56 AM

We were freezing in the stands of the old Baltimore Colts stadium watching the Tigers have a not-so-good game. One of our friends had a radio so that we could keep up with the Gamecocks (we loved to 'hear' them lose). Sadly, the Tigers lost; but, Navy beat the Gamecocks, who, as defined by chicken fans, were 'world beaters.' Navy made our trip back home a lot easier than it would have otherwise been.

We did lose to them that year, but...

Tiger Band welcomed them to Death Valley with a rousing version of "Anchors Away", which was priceless!

Loved the "Anchors Aweigh" greeting! ***
