2016 Tigers easily. Bigger faster players. There were o lines that averaged 260-270 back then where as most college o lines today average well over 300. Big Dex and Wilkins would destroy that line

Imagine that 5-2 defense from '81 trying to defend a spread offense. Then look at the 2016 defense against the option. Nuff said....

I agree with JCH, but its not really a fair comparison. College teams are built differently today. Offenses are spread across field and defenses are faster to defend the spread. It would be interesting game.

2016 for sure. The 1981 team didn't have enough offense to hang with the 2016 team. The defenses are comparable, with maybe a slight edge to 1981.

would win going away. Technology, training, diets, staff sizes, regimens, camp explosions - today's athletes are on a different plane physically and athletically.
Equal that out, like inflation, and talk real dollars, and I would probably go with 1981 due to the overall depth, talent, physicality, and drive in that squad. They delivered in the clutch just like 2016, and brought a relentless fury to every snap on both sides of the ball, including special teams.
And how cool is it that we get to even debate such a thing as college fans.

I would take the 2016 team all day.
I am really appreciative of that 81 team, but fb was alot different back then.
Back then, we just needed to play solid defense against very blane offenses.
Run the football, and not beat ourself. All you have to do is watch that game
against Nebraska and see they did everything they could to give the game away.
(Neb)- the 2016 team is much more superior in just about every position.
Honestly, just for conversation. If the 2 teams COULD play -wink, wink.
The 2016 team wins, 28 to 17.
Love that fisty hard nose defense from the 81 team. But the 2016 team is much,
much better. And Watson makes it all go.

2016 Tigers, and it ain't even close. Football players today are far bigger, faster and overall better athletes than in 1981.

But remember 1981 version had the decent lead at end but had to make a big 1st down to hold onto ball (with Homer running his asss off left & right to get it & run seconds off clock too)...
While 2016 Team had to Gut eR Done with 1 second remaining!

1981 only had to beat a 2 loss #4 ranked Husker team..
While 2016 squad took down #1 & only defeated team in Nation with unreal talent & HC...

2016 team would win, but nobody would throw Lee Nanney around, 510lb bench press. Also Frig, DeVane, Headen & Davis woulda caused plenty of trouble. Nobody from the 2016 team backfield would be happy to meet The Judge.

even if you adjusted the weight difference on the lines, the 1981 offense would not be able to score anywhere near what the 2016 would...
