1969 Clemson Football Photo

Mar 24, 2015, 12:33 PM

I remember when the schedule was always posted at the top of the Hill at DV like this (wish it still was every season).

Notice the unbelievable low game and season ticket prices! Compare that to now!

And notice the schedule itself - Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, etc. - sure wish it was like this every year.

You young guys probably think I Photoshopped this picture but it's real - these were the days when college football was still a college sport - not the big corporate business with minor league NFL players like today.

I think that was our first win at GT in a zillion years. I was in the Marine Engineer Officer's course at Camp Lejeune, NC at the time of the game and I remember my brother calling me and being so excited at beating the Yellow Jackets. I can'y remember of Charlie Waters was still at quarterback then or he had been moved to receiver or safety. Tommy Kendrick may have been the QB then. I remember it like it was yesterday.

looks like we had a pretty good defense that year too.

I think '69 may have been the year that Bama beat us here ..

Mar 24, 2015, 4:33 PM [ in reply to I remember Bama and AU coming to Clemson plus ACC games. ]

and Steedley Candler missed three very makable field goals. Needless to say that he was in Coach Howard's doghouse for quite a while. I am also think that was the year that Dennis Homan was their star receiver. Now days, any receiver on our team would be better than Homan or Ray Perkins who I think was their star receiver the previous year or two.

wow - my memory is bad. I was at the 1969 Bama game. I thought they beat us something like 55-0. All I can remember is we would have lost to them even if the 50 yard line was our goal line. I don't remember us ever managing to score though.

Their band was pretty awesome too.

DV.

A large crowd would gather at Tillman Hall and were led by members of the Cheerleading Squad down past Fort Hill to the stadium. Games were early afternoon, and the CDA sponsored dances in the cafeteria on Saturday evenings with groups like the Four Tops, Temptations, Drifters, etc. performing.

Most folks dressed in those days for the games, so you saw a lot of ties, dress slacks and shoes with the ladies in dresses, low heels - some with hats, gloves and purses. Many present day TigerNetters, now in their 50's and early 60's, no doubt entertained the crowd with fast slides down the hill or on the slope adjacent to the north stands.

Since there weren't many home games, home football weekends were pretty big events, and few students missed them.

A brawl broke out during the game but was quickly stopped. As I recall, this was the game when Frank Howard told Bear Bryant, "Bear, if I had your team, we would have won."

The Bear replied, "Well, if I had your team, we'd be national champs!" They were good friends and joked with each other a good bit.

Being on the sideline, I had the chance to meet Bear Bryant, and I remember him being friendly and of good humor. I also recall my date being aggravated because of my lingering too long on the field after the game. Her exact words were, "You know how long it takes me to get my hair ready for the dances!" LOL

+1 for your memory....because I can't remember. As

Mar 25, 2015, 5:46 AM

mentioned, I do recall my date (from Winthrop) being p.o.'d for my loitering after the game.

You'll remember that many Clemson profs and local townfolks opened their homes to students' dates in those days, and mine stayed several times at Dr. and Mrs. J.B. Whitney's home.

He was a longtime prof of Botany, and his sons, Chuck and Rob, were close friends. Usually several out-of-town dates would stay there with Mrs. Whitney providing refreshments and meals, including Sunday a.m. breakfasts. Another family, who were close friends, were the L.C. Hamilton's, and they also hosted our dates occasionally.

It amazed me how many Clemson families, including many profs and admin staff, were very generous by opening their homes to students. Good people...........very good people.
