63 Clemson student-athletes graduate Friday

The Clemson football team had 13 current and former players receive degrees on Friday, more than any other sport. Full Story »

Glad to see Derrick Hamilton and Jamaal Fudge graduate

It's always great when former players come back for their degrees.

Congrats to them, along with the others.

Good to see Potter graduate. Wasn't our rate low under OP?

May 7, 2010, 10:32 AM

Seems like we have trouble graduating bball players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OP's rate is over 70%

May 7, 2010, 11:36 AM

the current rate is for the freshman classes from 1999-2003. It also accounts for those who left early or transferred. OP did a great job getting his players through school.

Of the 17 graduates.

May 7, 2010, 12:17 PM

Great to see that two, who were unable medically complete their sports careers get the diploma; Etta etta Tawo and Capote. That is great that Clemson and these two athletes stayed together to get their degrees.

Congrats to all and a question

May 7, 2010, 10:33 AM

Say a player finished and graduates 5 years or so after they left school because the were playing a pro sport or something. Does their graduation factor into the grad rate stats? What is the time limit on that. Thanks if you know.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe they have 6 years from the time they enroll...

May 7, 2010, 10:46 AM

so in your scenario, if they graduate 5 years after they left school, it would not count for our graduation rate.

I'm sure I will be corrected it this is wrong.

Glad to see them graduate. Sad lack of engineering & science

May 7, 2010, 1:45 PM

I'm happy to see our student-athletes graduate. But every year when I see their majors, I'm disappointed at the low percentage of science, math, & engineering majors-- especially among the Big-3 sports of football, basketball, & baseball. About 26% of Clemson students major in science, math, & engineering, (something our country desperately needs) but only 16% of our student-athletes and ZERO percent of our Big-3 athletes graduated in those majors. ZERO PERCENT??? WOW!

In that regard, I don't think that our student-athletes are much different than most schools (not the likes of Duke). But what a reality check.

I think that's a fair concern, but in defense of the

student-athletes, do you realize how hard that is? For all the talk about bone-headed jocks who are just here to play ball and get their Communications degrees, we have to admit that football, basketball and baseball put an incredible amount of stress on a student's schedule.

I knew a baseball player when I was at school that majored in Mechanical Engineering. That was about all he did. Played ball, studied, FCA and slept. Brutal.
