Maintain a spot on a team yet still be able to have your 15 seconds of fame when BR makes your big reveal video.
Possibly a tool used by coaches to hide numbers at a position if they feel it will scare away another player they want in that same class.
Potentially to allow other teams to waste their time on a silent target making them less competitive for other noncommitted players.
To avoid harassment from peers/coaches that might disagree with the team you selected.

I'm thinking moreso the last item you mentioned. Silent committment, if there really is such a thing, keeps the allure up the upcoming schools have a shot, the fans will leave you alone for the most part. You saw how the coots turned on Thomas when they THOUGHT he was going there.

^^^ All of that and...

Apr 14, 2017, 6:59 PM [ in reply to Re: What is the purpose/strategy of a silent commit? ]

...Say a strong 4* RB wants an offer from Clemson for the 2018 class.
He's a great RB and is currently courted by a number of big schools.
http://www.tigernet.com/story/football/Four-star-Florida-RB-details-Clemson-visit-15787

So another 2018 recruit, a 5 star RB sees this sees this and still wants his time in the spot light, wants to be wined and dined and likes the media attention.
But he knows that Clemson is running out of scholarships for the 2018 class and wants to come here.
He finds out that 4* wants to come to Clemson and is concerned that we will move forward with an interested party instead of waiting on a possible recruit.
So *5 makes a silent commit, knowing that there is only one space left. The coaching staff knows not to offer 4* because that spot is going to the Silent Commit 5*.
Unlike another school in this state that over offers and then thins the herd to meet the 85 man max. Clemson doesn't do that and recruits regard our reputation highly and we want to keep it that way.

This is all hypothetical of course.

good points..but dabo doesnt play games and that's close

he doesn't encourage early commits, because he sees a commitment as saying "[ do" for "marriage into the family..he wants to establish real relationships before offering kids and doesn't want commitments until they've finished visiting and really want to be at clemson..and it works.

Or to hold your spot while you still look because you are not fully decided but saying you are. For the record, I have no clue what person you are referencing, so don't take it as a character attack on anyone.

Shouldn't this mean no more visits?

I think waiting for your deployed mom is legit. Probably a few other legit reasons. Agree on no other visits though if making a commitment.
