cheap alternative right now and a way to spread the "crisis" over ten years or so. What happened to that scenario?

I would guess that is the backup plan. Some may leave their money with IPTAY, but I would guess at least 50% of people will defer their money to next year, or take at least a partial refund if they can't get tickets. Some will even request refunds if they can get tickets due to changes in their financial situation since February when the 50% donation was due.

IPTAY will see what they are left with and borrow what they need to. We are lucky with the recent growth of IPTAY due to the success of the football team. I know they're putting most of the money back into the facilities, but IF this ends up being a 1-year thing, IPTAY will be fine. If it extends over multiple years, most of college football and coincidentally college sports will either make drastic changes, or disappear completely.

Concerns over iptay is one thing. Concerns over America is another. This pandemic is on a collision course with a full blown depression . That’s why need to to find a cure and halt this madness. Football is way behind in importance right now.
