Danny Ford on his hemp field: "This is the hardest thing I've ever done" |
Former Clemson head coach Danny Ford was one of twenty farmers in South Carolina to be selected to participate in the 2018 SC Industrial Hemp Pilot Program.
Ford and his family planted 54,000 hemp seeds and currently have an impressive 170 rows of hemp plants. "This is the hardest thing I've ever done to tell you the truth," Ford said in a video with FOX Carolina 21. "We started growing this and learning about the positive affects on people and the oil that we're going to make and will be used for medicine." “The Industrial Hemp Pilot Program creates a new opportunity for South Carolina farmers to increase crop diversity,” said Hugh Weathers, South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture in a press release. “Interest in the program was strong, and the Department of Agriculture worked diligently to select a broad representation of growers. “This is a new industry for South Carolina, and we’re hopeful that these first 20 growers will lay a strong foundation for an expanded 2019 program,” said Weathers. “Ultimately it’s about growth and expansion for our farmers and our economy.
