Dave Clawson on the transfer portal.

I am obviously mistaken. I thought that for this year the transfer portal was open and did not count against your 85 total.

He didn't say it the way I would have, but I think we basically agree. From a player's perspective it will too often become a "grass is greener on the other side."

From a coach's perspective it is a case of "It may serve as the cherry on top of the milkshake, but it can't be the entree."

Although this is a "Free Year" from the normal 4 years to play allowing players to have an extra year, the NCAA has not yet, to my knowledge, made any provisions and expansion to the current 85 scholarship limit. There was some talk regarding increasing the figure (possibly to 90) to allow for additional RETURNING players currently on rosters, not new signees, to be awarded scholarships. One of the issues, among many, that came up was how were Transfer Portal players be counted...against the current 85 or against the increased number. Teams like Clemson, which signed less than the annual limit of 25, have extra scholies available if the NCAA does not raise the 85 limit. My guess is that so most schools signed enough players to reach the 85, the NCAA will acquiesce and raise the limit. Guess they need to make a decision by the the February signing date.
