Roll call for anyone who got paddled back in the day...

Feb 28, 2020, 12:51 PM

Post by Tiger Contractor got me wondering.

I got punished in school with both paddles and dowel rods. Dowel rods hurt far worse. The teacher would only be 6 or 8 inches from your fanny with that dowel and it would bring tears to your eyes.

Elementary and Jr High. Jr high we had two principals, both big guys, and there were always arguments about who hit harder. So I made sure to get both. I called it a draw. Both pretty impressive. In Elementary my principal was hunting buddies with my grandfather and dad, plus my mom worked their as well. Unfortunately double jeopardy did not apply.

Yeah, I got a lot of that and the belt. My dad called a switch a 'hickory'. One day he told me and my brother Steve to "go cut me a hickory!" My brother went back to the house dragging a 15 ft. sapling, in protest. Didn't work, Dad just pulled off his belt and went to work.

Abso-lutely, bc parents risk going to jail if they leave just a blemish on their kids A$S from a needed A$S whipping, you know, like they punch mom in the mouth, or push her down the stairs!!!

More times than I can remember bc it was so many!!! And if my mom ever heard about it, I got my butt tore up again!!! I had my share of discipline growing up, and I'm thankful for about everyone of those A$S whipping bc I'm pretty sure that I deserved them all, and I got away with many I should've have had!!!

There was the one time my friend brought a lighter to school in third grade to set the playground on fire. Guilt by association. The paddle hung behind Mr. May’s large pine desk.

Don't be ashamed of anything that helped to make our surroundings a safer place. Today, bc of the lack of discipline, our surroundings are dangerous, even for our children in the schools that use to be one of the safest places we could send our kids and feel comfortable about their safety when they were there.

Now days bc our government use their lawmakers to invent laws that take the control and discipline out of the hands of parents with laws that threaten to and will jail parents if/when they discipline their kids in the home.

Our society here in the UGA is quickly becoming as dangerous for parents and their children as it is in the war torn countries of the world. Now days in the great US of A, we fear for ourselves and our children getting shot or blown up by people that has never been taught home discipline!!! We can't deny it anymore either, just turn on the nightly news or read the daily paper, it's happening all around the USA now on about a daily basis!!!!

When I moved from West Palm back to Rockwood, TN...

Feb 28, 2020, 1:25 PM

I was in the 11th grade but had to take freshman health and TN history to graduate by state law. I sat behind a fine looking young freshman in History class named Betty Fae. Mr Eichelberger, a 26 yr/o with pale white skin and blonde hair taught the class. The girls, including Betty Fae all had major hots on the guy.

I really liked Rodger but was jealous of all the attention he drew from the girls. One day I whispered to BF, 'psss, BF ask Mr E...' So Betty Fae raised her hand and was called on.

"Mr Eichelberger, if Russia attack Turkey from the rear would Greece help?'

So, my cousin, a nice round type girl giggled first, then Boone Clifton lol and everyone else except Betty Fae, Mr Eichelberger and me broke out in hysterical laughter. Poor Rodger turned blood red and tears came to his eyes from embarrassment. He looked straight at me and motioned for me to follow him into the hall.

He asked if I wanted to go to the office or if I'd rather settle it here. He hit me so hard I almost regretted my prank. Then he gave me two more much lighter licks which let me know he respected my nerve, I reckoned.

I need to call Rodger and see if he remembers me after 50 years. True story, bro.

Only on Wednesday???????? It was every day on B-2 in 1948-49. My few remaining classmates agree that we would not go through that again - we would go elsewhere. What a shame that we were made to think physical degradation was proper and necessary in a military school! We were too dumb to know better back then.

More times than I want to admit, but 1 time as a freshman in high school the principal got a little carried away. I was a lot bigger than he and I had finally had enough so I grabbed it from him and whacked him. Regretted doing than as the assistant came in and then my dad showed up. You can bet he torn my a$$ up right there in front of them. Spent the next week suspended and got one from my dad each day. Didn't get into any more trouble after that on.

1960 and last day of Class! I'm in a Study Hall and Football Coach says "Who hasn't been paddled this year?". I raise my hand and say "Me Coach". He says come up front and cut the book. Turn the book to page 156. He says, "great, bend over, you get 6". Lifted me off the floor with first one and let up on the next five. He said, "You need to keep your mouth shut". I said yes sir while the whole class was laughing at me. I learned my lesson!

Small private school. My dad was the principal. He used the belt, either at school or home.

When I graduated college I taught 4 years in a similar school. My first year i was the only Male teacher, so i was called upon to do all corporal punishment using a paddle just like that one.

The first kid I "struck" was 15 years old. I had no experience giving swats. When I swung the paddle the first time the kid bolted upright, turned to me and yelled, "That hurt!" And I said, "And you're getting 3 more."

The designated adult witness later told me that I sure got my money's worth. I guess I was hitting home runs instead of singles. I never had to swat that kid again. I wish it was because he straightened up. But he dropped out of school as soon as he turned 16.

Then there was the 9-year old who came to us after getting in trouble repeatedly at another school. When he earned swats his first week, the lady principal told me to take it easy on him. I did. So when he went out of the office laughing, she got mad and told me never to take it easy on my swats ever again. I probably had to use that paddle on him about once a month for the rest of that year.

I never had to be a test subject for that particular instrument (I think I had learned my lesson by the time I had reached his grade) but I got plenty from other teachers.
The best one I ever got was also the last one. It was in the sixth grade from Mr. Ed Bishop. He taught me a great life lesson with the "paddling" he gave Dale H. and me just outside our homeroom door. I'm sure the rest of the class heard him "unload on us" (he hit the sole of his shoe and only Dale and I knew what happened) and I have used his wise technique with my own kids.
My teachers were great and if I ever took a thrashing I had it coming (and then some)!

Yep. They called it a "Board Meeting". When I was in public school I got two, this was 8th grade in 1973ish. I did not deserve either time. :)
They drilled holes in the wooden paddle to make the "sting" last longer. It was the PE teacher/coach who administered the punishment. Coach Neil Collins was one of them at Alice Drive Jr High School.

First grade had a teacher that would take my hand and bend my fingers backwards and smack me in the palm of my hand about 10 times with a wooden ruler and it stung like He!!. 5th and 6th grade got the dreaded paddle on the backside several times each year. In Junior High the asst. principal had a wooden handle with a leather strap connected to it. He bragged that he soaked it in oil all summer so it would have the full effect. Thank goodness I never had be on the wrong end of that one.

Feb 28, 2020, 7:07 PM

Back in '75 before paddling was pretty much banned, I showed up for work at a school I will not identify to protect the innocent (or not-so-innocent). As soon as I went in the front door of the school, the principal caught me and said he needed a witness, When I got in his office, there were 2 boys about fourth grade age who were about to experience a paddle that made the one pictured above look puny - it was as long as a baseball bat and did have the holes in it. The first boy was told to lean forward and hold onto the principal's desk with both hands. The first swing lifted him off the floor and he got one more. The thing I remember most is how the 2nd boy reacted to his buddy being hit like that. He was crying louder than the one who was hit and when it was his turn proceeded to put a hand behind his rear end just as the principal was ready to swing.Luckily he stopped his swing in time, but warned the boy that his hand would be broken if he did that again. Not quite sure why the principal wanted a witness to that - might've been better if it was his word against the boys'.

I got whipped with a belt or "hickory stick" (that's what they called it anyway) every Sunday after church as my uncle always told on me if I did anything wrong in church. It was like a standard thing. Of course there were always several during the week.

The sad thing is (IMO), I don't think my kids ever whip their kids. Times, they are a changing. :(

First grade through high school, I don’t remember getting a paddling as a senior.

Many, many paddlings in elementary back in the mid 60's due to likely being ADHD. Worst part was my mother was a teacher in the same school so I always got it again at home too. Finally ended getting my backside tanned by middle school.

All us gullible elementary kids were afraid that Principal Mr. Putman had "an electric paddling machine". No one ever saw it but it was always the talk of the playground.

Coach Eddie Dukes (or was it Myers?) (Football) was also a History (or was it a Science?) Teacher . . . My memory is failing me . . .

Anyway . . . He fashioned a doozie out of a one-man, one-hand boat paddle . . . It was a badge of honor to be on the receiving end . . . Boys and Girls alike caught its brunt . . . After you caught your breath, you were allowed to sign that beastly weapon!!!

As an added treat, if you hadn't misbehaved, you could pay him $3 to join the cult . . . He took no less of a swing for those who were monetarily invested, lifting all comers off the floor!!!

Yes, I am an honored paying member of his clan . . . Those were good days!!!!!!!

I played high school baseball in SC for a 2A team back in the 80s. We found our Coach's Playboy stash right before practice in his office WAY back in the day. He found us. My ### still hurts...

My elementary school principal used a rubber hose instead of a paddle. That thing would leave marks.

yes elementary and middle school. Even teachers were allowed to paddle

I am from SC. I too got paddled in school way back when.

But the gloriously 'fun' stories people like to tell about child abuse back in the 'good ole days' are odd as are the notions life was safer in the 60s and 70s than now. Would the guys who tell these stories with so much enthusiasm now like it if their own children were whipped in school today? Do the folks who seem to think paddling was a good idea then whip their own kids today when their kids are teenagers? Do the beaters use belts today? Specially made paddles? Dowel rods?

Once in sixth grade I was throwing snow balls at a girl on the playground and got sent to the principles office. On the way there I was intercepted by my sixth grade teacher Mr. Lilly. He brought me back to class and drew a small circle on the blackboard and told me to put my nose in it. It was just high enough so that I had to stand on my tiptoes to reach it. He told me I would not get the paddled as long as my heels did not touch the floor. So there I was standing on my toes and hoping he would let me go before my legs gave out and my heels touched the floor, while the whole class is watching and wondering when I will get it. Finally my heels touched and I got the paddle and lived to tell about it. It was a lesson well learned from one of the best teachers I had growing up.

Every one of my 4th and 5th grade teachers had paddles that older brothers had made in 6th grade shop class to use on their younger siblings. A couple were pretty ornate and probably had Dad's help to make them.

The thing that I find odd is the difference in parents these days. When and where I grew up, the last thing that you wanted was for Mom and Dad to find out that you got whipped in school, because you were going to get it twice as bad when you got home. Now parents would go ballistic with the school if they found out that their kid was whipped.

I did...a lot. I'd keep my straw from lunch and shoot spitballs for the rest of the day. No bueno.

Wore my little asss out with those paddles.
