Helping my nephew with a science project

Jan 9, 2016, 7:04 PM

And he is learning about symbiotic relationships and was asking me for an example. I, being a smart uncle, immediately said "a great example of a symbiotic relationship is the shamecocks and the SEC. A symbiotic relationship is one where 2 species live together but only one benefits from it, like a parasite." That's exactly what the coots (i.e.: shamecocks) are, parasites. They add absolutely nothing to their mighty SEC but live off the $$$ and the glory of others. Seemed a perfect example, he agreed and is still giggling!

Symbiotic relationship is two diff organisms living together and benefit each other. Coots are parasites as you stated.

It does give them another cellar dweller. Some teams have to lose in the conference. So it might indeed by symbiotic in the sense that the Coots get $$$$ and the others get a win.

e.coli in our gut would be one example. Without it,

we wouldn't be able to digest stuff. Of course, it has to be OUR e.coli, and not the stuff that comes in Jack in the Box burgers.
