I don't say this to indicate that Dabo will or won't go to Bama, but he wouldn't be leaving because he feels it would be a step up in position, but because it's his alma-mato. Think about it this way. You're a huge Clemson fan, and possibly a Clemson graduate as well. Let's even pretend that you played football at Clemson, and got to be an assistant coach there for a few years.

Then say your coaching career took you elsewhere, and you became the head coach somewhere else because the Clemson just just wasn't open at the time, or because you weren't a big enough deal yet to get it. Say you spend several years as the head coach there, and win championships. Obviously you're going to grow a lot of love for the place you're coaching, but would you ever lose your love of Clemson? At what point could Clemson call and offer you the head coaching job, and you turn it down? Could you ever reach a point of where you'd refuse the Clemson job?

That's pretty much where Dabo's going to be if Alabama ever comes calling, and only he'll know what his answer will be, and heck, he may not even know the answer himself.

True but Dabo has a lot of examples in front of him of how quickly that alma can turn on you. Randy Shannon is one that comes to mind. Ralph Freigden went as far as saying he wanted to rip up his degree and hand it back to Maryland or something along those lines. But Dabo's a dreamer who believes in himself. If he doesn't go to Bama it won't be because he doesn't believe he an be successful. I don't know but it would be a sad day should he ever choose to do so. I was pretty young when Danny left but I remember it felt like the end of Clemson football as we knew it. I don't want to go through all that again and have to wait two decades to begin to have that type of success again. Not only did Dabo get us back to the level Danny had us at in the mid-late 80s when I became a fan he has exceeded Danny's accomplishments.

I think Dabo loves Clemson more than y'all think. He was let go by Alabama and given a chance by Clemson. Not only did Clemson get him back coaching, we trusted him with the reigns when no one else would've. He might not even be a college coach right now had Clemson not come calling. I think his love for Clemson has surpassed that love for Alabama. Add to the fact that he is a national contender year in and year out. Leaving would come with some uncertainty of having the same opportunities. If we weren't where we are as a program he might step up to Alabama, but where we are will be hard to leave.

Dec 9, 2017, 2:06 PM [ in reply to Re: Truth of the matter is that by the time Saban retires, Dabo ]

UNLESS something significant happens between Clemson's administration and Dabo. But I would bet my house Dabo's WISH is to retire from Clemson, even if anything else is on the table (NFL, Bama, etc).

Speaking specifically to Bama, on paper it would be moronic.

First and formost, he cannot replicate his success at Clemson by doing the same thing at Bama. Clemson's situation and culture was the perfect place to institute Dabo's culture. Bama is not set up for that. They shouldn't even want it. They have their culture and their identity and it works for them. To deconstruct that for Dabo's style in the HOPES that it would be as effective at Bama as it is at clemson is sheer stupidity.

Second, Bama fired him.

Third, Dabo's been at Clemson way longer than he was at Bama. His kids only know Clemson. His kids have either enrolled or will enroll there. His son is a Clemson football player. Being an alumnus is powerful but when someone like Dabo starts figuring in his family, that's way more powerful.

Of course, fourth, you don't leave a place where you are a top five coach in compensation and where you're personal system has allowed for three consecutive trips to the playoffs so that you can replace a highly successful legend with an entirely different style.

I could go on and on. Bottom line, Dabo's waaaaaay too smart to go back to Bama.

What about Bud Foster? He never made it to HC anywhere but if I understand correctly he had more than one chance to come to Clemson. Apples to Oranges?

... lateral move.

I know that sounds a bit bold, but all most high school players know is what has happened lately and in the eyes of the average high school recruit, "lately" Clemson and Alabama will be pretty much on an equal level.

In fact after we win the rubber match next month, high schoolers may actually see Clemson as the better program.

Chose to retire in Clemson. Danny would have retired as a coach here just as Frank Howard did but he was forced out. Ford and Howard were both Alabama alums. What makes you think Dabo would be any different. There is something in these hills!,

Re: Truth of the matter is that by the time Saban retires, Dabo

Dec 9, 2017, 3:25 PM

The fans and administration at Clemson love Dabo like Alabama once did Bear Bryant. He has fairly free reign to build it all in the way he chooses. He really does not have to worry about 1 injury riddled season getting him fired. There seems to be a loyalty there from top to bottom. If he were to go to Bama, his accomplishments would always be compared to Bear Bryant and Nick Saban, and even if he becomes just as successful there, it would just not be as appreciated. At Clemson he is already legendary, and that legend is continuing to grow, and the administration and he have a very good relationship. Why would he give all that up to go into a job that is less certain. Dabo has what I think is probably the best coaching position in the NCAA as far as freedom, loyalty, fans, and facilities. Heck he dang near drew the blueprints for the new football complex. I could be wrong, but it would surprise me if he ever leaves Clemson until he retires. The positives of staying just far outweigh the negatives...why would he ever risk that?

a school for another one was over 40 years ago.

Johnny Majors left Pitt for Tennessee.
Doesn't happen very often.

You don't count Urban, Spurrier, Saban, even Danny Ford because they didn't go straight to the next school, they went NFL, or "retired", or some other reason.
