Four tombstones? The numbers say it was that kind of year

Some of this has been posted before, but some of the notes and nuggets that were gleaned from Clemson’s thrilling 35-31 win over Alabama Monday night are fascinating.

Both championships in Florida, where we are 2-0 in championship games. Should be a requirement in the future to play there.

Both championship QB's from Georgia but were basically ignored by UGA

Both QB's were African-American. Something USC has never had for a full season and UGA only once. Clemson, to my recollection, has had 13 full seasons with African-American QB's, 8 of which I believe resulted in 10 or more wins. Homer(1), Cameron(2), Tajh(3) and Deshaun(2). All but Tajh were from Georgia

Zerrick Cooper is from Georgia :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Deshaun "committed" to Clemson when he was a sophomore?

Jan 11, 2017, 11:01 PM

Right? UGA didn't really have a shot.

I was a freshman at Clemson and in attendance for the 1982 Orange Bowl to witness Clemson win the 1981 National Championship.

My daughter is currently a freshman at Clemson and in attendance with me for the 2017 National Championship game to witness Clemson win the 2016 National Championship.

Jan 11, 2017, 8:31 PM

I too was a freshman in 1981 and attended the Orange Bowl in 1982 for the National Championship. That year my family (Mom leading the way) took us to Florida to Disney World and then I hooked up with my roommate and headed to the game. This time I was able to take my Mom to the game with my cousin (2000) and nephew (current junior at Clemson). My two daughters recently graduated from Clemson as well so it is a family thing. Wish I could have taken my wife (1986), daughters and future student (son) but they were all cheering at any rate! Congrats on being able to share that with your freshman daughter!

Go Tigers!!!

anybody remember that basketball win? for some reason

Jan 11, 2017, 9:29 PM

I seem to remember listening to it on the radio. Wasn't that the game where Jim Philips was having some fun at the end of the game by saying something like, "I'll let you fans tell from the crowd whether these free throws are good"?

They tweaked tombstone rules several years back

Jan 12, 2017, 6:36 AM [ in reply to Won't we only get 3 tombstones? Va Tech at 16 was a ]

so that now a tombstone goes in for any non-home win over a ranked team. I *believe* this was first done for the 2003 Peach Bowl win over Tennessee, though I can't recall for certain.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, they tweaked it for Top 10 teams, TN was #6.

Jan 12, 2017, 7:16 AM

I am under the same impression as @clemsonsuzi on this.

I think that's true, and I think it was a mistake.

Jan 12, 2017, 9:02 AM [ in reply to They tweaked tombstone rules several years back ]

Honestly, the tombstone tradition was cooler when it was a recognition of going into the HOUSE of a ranked opponent and beating them. And that's because it's rare, and difficult. Now the tradition amounts to "You beat a ranked team without the help of Death Valley." Very different. And when we play ranked teams in the post-season, usually that means we're ranked highly too.

Just my opinion but I liked it better the old way.

I actually agree with this. It's nice to commemorate big bowl wins over ranked teams, but I think doing it in a different way would be better.

Of course, UGA hasn't been on the same level as the other in terms of recent championships, and including them would also warrant including UF in the top 5 SEC programs, but it's still interesting to note all of our success against the "Mighty SEC."
