Before the BCS and the CFP, the National Champion was selected via poll. They’ve already said who they think is the best CFB team in 2020 and if there are no games then there’s no evidence to refute it. Way more valid than some of the titles Bama claims.
But I agree with the OP; if they ask again for rankings saying this one is final and counts, mysteriously Clemson would probably drop to second or third even though nothing has changed. That’s just the way it is. We were told we had no chance against Bama’s best team ever, then destroyed them 44-16. At the end of the day, we would not get the benefit of the doubt. We have to prove it.

I wouldn't doubt that, but no trophy winning will be recorded in the history books, and everybody but the SEC know that the SEC is the ESECPN darling conference, and folks won't pay them any attention when it's about who the 2020 NC is, there will be nobody listed as the 2020 NC in FB. The words in that category will read, FB season was cancelled bc of covid-19 virus pandemic that caused the cancellation of all college FB for the 2020 season, Period!!!

Bottom line: ESPN is cooked if there is no CFB season. That is a mountain of air time removed from all of their channels.
It won't kill them but they will bleed profusely and probably cause big time layoffs.
