My grandad had a pretty awesome story about Strom.

Pop used to drive around in his retired years just to get out of the house. One day, he drove down to Edgefield. He got out and walked up to the Strom Statue and was looking at it, when an old man in a wheelchair, being pushed by an aid came up to him.

"Excuse me sir, would you mind reading the plaque to me?"

Sure as crap, it was Strom Thurmond in the flesh.

He said, "Ya know, I never had a chance to read the plaque."

So my Pop read the plaque on the Strom Thurmond statue to the real Strom Thurmond.

My Pop was close friends with Sen. Donald Holland, so they shared some stories about Senator Holland and then went their separate ways.

Strom was a polarizing figure, and my Pop was a lifelong Democrat, but still a pretty cool story.

My brother lived at the Clemson House while there. His roommate got on the elevator to go town, and Strom Thurmond was on it with an aide of his. Roommate didn't say anything for a while, and Strom broke the silence by saying: "You know who I am, don't you ?"
