SC high schools will go to 10-point scale

Mar 15, 2016, 8:47 AM

Sorry if Germans, but this news will put SC athletes on a more even playing field for eligibility and scholarships. Dabo and Muschamp apparently helped make the push to change from the 7-point scale to the 10-point scale.

It's not about lowering standards....

Mar 15, 2016, 8:57 AM

it's about competing on a level playing field with other states.

So a 90 is not now an A instead of a B?

Mar 15, 2016, 8:59 AM

That's a lowering of the standard.

Maybe they're not doing it expressly because they want to lower the standard, but factually and objectively, it certainly is doing that.

Mar 16, 2016, 2:49 PM [ in reply to So a 90 is not now an A instead of a B? ]

No it's really not lowering the standard. Just because the amount of points it takes to get an A is three points less has nothing to do with the amount of education one will receive in this state. If anything it might be used as an incentive to get students to try harder to get better grades.

It's too bad that we have to go down to level the field. Nobody will ever come up to level the field.
Another case of "dumbing down America".

That's fine.

Mar 15, 2016, 9:03 AM

I'm not against it, per se. But it is a lowering of the standard. I believe this to be ironic, since so many people talk about how poor education is in SC.

what letter you assign to it. Now if it becomes easier to get a 90, then that's lowering standards.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Scoring 90% is still scoring 90% no matter

Mar 16, 2016, 6:41 AM

Not exactly true. While a 90 is still a 90, the lowering of the standard comes when it is converted to a GPA. For example, a student that currently has a 90 in every class would have a 3.0 GPA on the HS transcript sent to colleges for admissions. That same student under the new system would have that 90 in every class translate to. 4.0 GPA on his HS transcript. Yes, the 90 remained the same but the standard was lowered where that 90 now equals a 4.0 GPA instead of the 3.0 GPA it did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Scoring 90% is still scoring 90% no matter

Mar 17, 2016, 7:02 AM

SC doesn't work this way and never has been this way. All As are not a 4.0. Currently in CP courses 93=4.0 94=4.125 95=4.250 etc. Honors is worth .5 more than CP. AP is worth 1.0 more than CP. (both were worth a full point more under the pre-2001 model).

This change is really an embarrassment. So if Texas goes to a 58 is an A we must change in order to compete with them?

Terrible idea. A degree from UNC is distorted and nothing happened with fake classes and now here we go with lowering standards in high schools across a great state.

"I've played multiple sports and would bet any amount that I'm still more athletic than you at this present time...."

The REAL NEWS ON THIS....

Mar 15, 2016, 11:41 AM

Greenville County currently has a grade floor of 61. That means no student can make below a 61. So if they dont do any assignments, the lowest they can make is a 61.
Under a 10 point scale....a 61 is passing. So in Greenville next year, it will literally be impossible to fail a class.
I'm all good with the ten point scale. But Greenville County just really pulled a fast one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Or they could just lower it to 51

Mar 16, 2016, 12:09 PM

To be fair, I don't like the idea if a grade floor very much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SC high schools will go to 10-point scale

Mar 15, 2016, 12:05 PM

I am a military brat. I went to 7 different schools between 1st grade and 12th. I started high school my freshman year up north....in November of that year my Dad retired and we moved back to South Carolina. At the high school I went to up north, I had to fight for A's and B's on a 10 point scale. At the high school I went to in SC, I did the bare minimum for A's and B's on a 7 point scale.

I always thought that the 7 point scale helped even the field some because the curriculum and the expectations were much different at the time.

Maybe I just had better teachers in SC. Maybe the curriculum and expectations have become more standardized since I was in school. To me it is not just about the point scale.....but what is expected from a student.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed

Mar 15, 2016, 12:12 PM

My HS switched from a 5 point scale to a 10-point scale after my sophomore year. Oddly enough nobody's GPA really changed. C-Students didn't become B-Students overnight. It doesn't really change anything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agreed

Mar 15, 2016, 3:07 PM

My SC Highschool's GPA was calculated using the specific specific number grade and what level classes you were in. I'm not really sure what this really changes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I never was sure when a 93 became an A

Mar 16, 2016, 2:53 PM

When I graduated HS in SC in 1987 it took a 95 to get an A, a 93 was a B. I moved out of state after graduating Clemson in 1992 and moved back to SC in 1999 and my kids go to school here and low and behold a 93 is an A. It was lowering standards to me because they would say they had straight A's but I would tell them not by my scale!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I never was sure when a 93 became an A

Mar 16, 2016, 10:55 PM

You are completely misremembering. Prior to the change in 2001 the grade point scale was 90-100 A, 80-90 B, 70-80 C. 60-70 D, then F. This standard was codified in the 70s and not changed until the current system. I would love for you to link me any school district documentation that has a 90-95 = "B" grade curve. The only possible exception being a private school grading on a curve where letter grades would be variable. But that still wouldn't mean 90=B, it could actually mean 90 = A+. Public high schools aren't allowed to grade this way.
