SC Folks - good summary on status of state budget

Mar 26, 2021, 8:43 PM

work in the house.

State looks in great shape especially after the year we’ve been through.

Don’t agree with everything they want to spend money on but for the most part, I think they got the priorities right.

Wonder how they plan to address the Pension fund shortfall

Isn’t that ~$20billion underfunded?

Would also like the lottery scholarship amounts increased, or fund universities better to limit their tuition increases. The % covered by those scholarships gets smaller every year.

That does seem like a bite-you-in-the-butt issue, but maybe

the actuaries have some decent projections.

What am I saying?

The crazy part is they spent substantial amounts of money to outsiders for ‘alternative investments’, that then returned substandard returns. Warren Buffett would have a field day.

We were friendly for a spell with the funds chief investment officer before he ‘resigned’. Tried not to talk shop too often, but his group and performance sucked. Thankfully not corrupt like prior folks, just somewhat incompetent performance.

Yes. Pensions are an integral part of our economic scheme.

And they're all broke.

There’s an inverse relationship in your proposal.

The more lottery scholarships go up, the more tuition goes up similarly. Rather than viewing it as a partial load off parents’ shoulders, they (quite accurately if not ethically) view it as fortification for the price elasticity of tuition costs.

Been noticing this with K-12 private schools too

Anytime funding frees up to cover tuition costs, the schools just keep increasing their rates.

Many states now have lottery scholarship money. Curious how Clemson/UoSC rates have increased relative to peers.
