When I think about Milton Jennings, Bernard Sullivan, Noel

Dec 2, 2020, 8:35 PM

Johnson, Ricky Jones, Catalin Baciu, and numerous other highly rated basketball recruits who never lived up to expectations at Clemson, I am really pleased with the real talent and basketball acumen of the new guys Brownell has put on the court this year. Out of Baehre, Prosper, Kidd, and Hall, we have 4 highly skilled baskeball players who can really play. All still have to gain some experience and will have to develop as all freshmen do, but there's not a raw project in the bunch. I could be proven wrong, but all of these guys look to me to be far, far ahead of where those other guys were when they arrived, and much more deserving of the high "star" rankings, and much more ready to play and contribute at this level. I almost feel like there's been a some kind of screw-up and we wound up with some UNC/Dook/Louisville recruits. Go coach Brownell, and go Tigers!

I was impressed by the play of the "two -minute men" who mopped up at the end. They made shots and even free throws - how long since that has happened?

Please correct me if I am wrong on these two players, but Milton, and Catalin never lived up to expectations at Clemson because they were "post players" recruited by a coach whose philosophy was "run and gun".

I don't think Milton was going to live up to expectations, regardless of the coach

Maybe not,but he definitely couldn't under Purnell.

No, they just weren't nearly as good as advertised.

I appreciate them being Clemson men, but neither was anywhere near "elite" as their high school hype may have indicated. My whole point is that the current crop of youngsters do look like legitimate 4 and 5-star players.

Ricky Jones is the one that was most hyped. The only reason we signed him over Dean Smith was because he was from Pendleton. He was supposed to be the next Michael Jordan. He was a first team parade all-American while Kenny Anderson, Alonzo Mourning, Dennis Scott, and Shawn Kemp were not. I saw 90% of his home games over his career and I cannot remember a SINGLE highlight.

Plenty of reason for full optimism right now. As I've stated before, Purnell's last two recruiting cycles (these names, plus Marcus Thornton, who never made it to campus) were failures. Abysmal. I like the trend of player we are getting lately. We seem to be getting more basketball players with athleticism than athletes with a bit of basketball ability.
