Has the Texans' game/time management been discussed?

Oct 21, 2019, 10:10 AM

If so, feel free to ignore...

But I'm at a loss as to what I saw yesterday from an NFL coaching staff.

In short:

--Texans ball 4th and 9 on their own 5, 3 timeouts, clock around 3:15 seconds

--They are late getting the punt team out, game clock runs to 2:44
(6 seconds left on the play clock)

--Texans coach decides not to punt (instead decides to take the safety), but instead
of simply eating the 6 seconds and taking the delay of game prior to running the
"take a safety play" they use their first timeout leaving them with 2. I believe
in the NFL that gameclock would not run between the delay of game and the snap for
the "take a safety play" in the last 4 minutes of the game. A timeout to used to
save 6 seconds.

--So now 2 timeouts left 2:44 on the clock, Houston takes the safety.
Not a bad decision.

--After the free kick Colts ball on their 20 with 2:35. Indianapolis runs the ball
for a 2 yard loss. Play over around 2:30 and the Texans don't call a Timeout,
instead opting to let the clock run all the way down to the 2 minute warning.

--Colts run two more plays (both keeping the game clock running) and the Texans call
a TO after each.

--Colts punt with 1:49 on the clock.

So had they managed it differently, the Texans would've had the ball with 2 minutes left and a TO, or 2:20+- with no timeout. Even granting the first error of wasting a TO, they should've had the ball with 2:00 left at worst.

Just strange end of game strategy to me.

If the receiver just catches the ball instead of tipping it into the air for a pick we could have tied the game.

I do agree with you though why call a to just to take a safety. made no sense to me.

That is true

Though the argument can also be made had Watson not put it so high, it's an easy catch.

All of that said, however, there was a good chance to save a TO, or more time on the clock that the Texans' coaching staff simply bungled.

Agreed Bill O'Brien will leave you scratching your head with some of his game management decisions.

They wasted 4-5 seconds running across the back of the end zone to take a knee too.

Just hike it out the back of the end zone!
