The U used to be somebody. Where did they get off

Dec 26, 2019, 10:01 PM

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I'd say when Butch Davis left, twenty years ago.

Miami's problem is they can't get away with all the dirty stuff anymore. A clean Miami program is basically Wake Forest. It was a huge mistake bringing them into the conference.

Straight up assy QB play for the last few years have done them in. A lot of top ranked recruits haven’t planned out or left.

They got off track after the questionable at best / bogus or bought at worst 4th down interference call in the first overtime against Ohio State in the 2003 National Championship Fiesta Bowl game. They were a dynasty that got derailed by the officials with a late flag. It gave Ohio State a first down and goal at the one. The more talented team that night did not win. Questionable character and coaching and ultimately failure in recruiting all contributed to the fall. Terrible president, Donna Shalala, at the time in terms of supporting football and just being a corrupt university president in all phases of her tenure. And they joined the coastal division of the ACC which in itself is a call to mediocrity.

That DPI was "turrible"! Ohio $$$$$tate got away with the win but I will go to my grave feeling Miami got robbed. Just a call you can't make in that situation b/c you took the players out and inserted outside sources to determine the outcome of the game(the officials).

They need another Jimmy Johnson or a Nick Saban type coach. They won't get turned around until that happens.
Where did they go South? As you stated - having a president who wanted to distance them self from football. The non-support and cold shoulder football got during that time brought them down. Remember the big controversy with the agent guy? That president had to show people that Miami is about academics and we are not this thugish football school. But, basically they over did it.

When convicted ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro got locked-up...

Dec 27, 2019, 8:38 AM

and all the cars, cash, nightclub outings, sex parties, and other gifts he was giving to Miami players and recruits stopped.

When all of the illegal inducements stopped, so did a lot of the interest in the program.

This is exactly it. Miami was cheating like nobody ever has

Dec 27, 2019, 10:03 AM

since Howard Schnellenberger was coach in the early '80s. Thug money. The wheels started coming off under Larry Coker in the mid 2000s and then it went straight down. The funny thing is, Shapiro reportedly started spending money on them in 2002 but it didn't help any, and then when he started throwing people under the bus it got real ugly.

Biggest problem is. They no longer own southern Fla as a rich recruiting ground. At one time they could get 5- 6 even more recruits from one HS. They will be back, they will find a way. Too much history to just wallow and die. Btw we lost to USF in a bowl game too. Glad we didn't get kicked out.

We probably didn't want to be there...

Dec 27, 2019, 9:17 AM

Disappointing season (finishing 6 - 6 and losing three of the final five games including the season finale to uof6c) and an even more disappointing showing in the bowl game which really wasn't as close as the 26 - 31 score would seem to indicate.

Dec 27, 2019, 9:48 AM

Since they stopped paying players, they cannot be dominant like they once were.

They had a chance to be very good and stable and clean but they couldn't be satisfied with Mark Richt, because he was not dominant like before, 8, 9, 10 wins is the best they can hope for and he would have taken them there, but they refuse to see reality down there.

Re: The U used to be somebody. Where did they get off

Dec 27, 2019, 10:23 AM

Two words: Donna Shalala.

She's Miami's president. She's the kind of academic that disdains football and doesn't realize it's the front door to the University.

She doesn't support the program, and has in fact done numerous things that actively hamstrung it, such as allowing the city to demolish the Orange Bowl. They offered to replace it. She said no, and the U became a homeless tenant in the Dolphins' stadium...which is 45+ minutes from the campus.

The U will be back when they get a president who works with the program instead of hamstringing it. Right now the two are just not rowing in the same direction and it's killing the program. Even former alum and loyalist Mark Richt was barely two years in before he threw up his hands and gave up; he knew it was a losing battle as the situation currently stands.

Kind of sad because it's not at all what the ACC thought it was getting when they admitted the Canes.

Agree Quoz ...... but also some of the worst coaching hires in recent memory. This latest one may be the worst. Actually I don't think Richt was particularly bad, but you pretty much nailed why he left.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

She was the hammer that hit the nail, for sure, but she

Dec 27, 2019, 10:37 AM [ in reply to Re: The U used to be somebody. Where did they get off ]

was made the decision to destroy the program later on due to perception (reality) of the Miami program when the thuggery came to light. The Orange Bowl thing I've not heard about but the OB was in a horrible and dangerous part of town.

All I need to know about Shalala is her politics. She's a diehard Clinton liberal politician posing as a university president.

Dec 27, 2019, 10:39 AM [ in reply to Re: The U used to be somebody. Where did they get off ]

I know every situation is different, but Miami now reminds me somewhat of Clemson during the years between when Danny Ford left and Dabo was hired (probably more so before Tommy Bowden, even). Clemson recovered and so can Miami - but it takes commitment, no doubt.
